Excerpt from Cyclopedia of American Horticulture, Comprising Suggestions for Cultivation of Horticultural Plants, Vol. 1 of 6 It is the purpose of this work to make a complete record of the status of North American horticulture as it exists at the close of the nineteenth century. The work discusses the cultivation of fruits, flowers and garden vegetables, describes all the species which are known to be in the horticultural trade, outlines the horticultural possibilities of the various states, territories and provinces, presents biographies of those persons not living who have contributed most to the horticultural progress of North America, and indicates the leading monographic works relating to the various subjects. It has been the dream of years to close the century with a comprehensive index to American horticulture, and for a long period the Editor, therefore, has collected notes, books, plants and information for the furtherance of the work. Before the active preparation of the manuscript was begun, a year was expended in making indexes and references to plants and literature. Every prominent plant and seed catalogue published in the United States and Canada has been indexed, and the horticultural periodicals have been explored. A dozen artists have been employed in various horticultural centers to draw plants as they grow. Expert cultivators and botanists have contributed on their various specialties. All the important articles are signed, thus giving each author full credit for his work, and holding him responsible for it. The work is made first-hand, from original sources of information. So far as possible, the botanical matter has been newly elaborated from the plants themselves; and in all cases it is specially prepared directly for this Cyclopedia, and is not the work of copyists nor of space-writers. In many of the most important subjects, two authors have contributed, one writing the culture and the other the botany; and in some cases the culture is presented from two points of view. When it has been necessary to compile in comparatively unfamiliar groups, the greatest pains has been taken to select authentic sources of information; and the proofs always have been submitted to recognized specialists. Alba more than it does its near neighbor P. Pungens, being of finer foliage and not as stiff branched as the latter. It is one of the few conifers that will stand the extreme cold of St. Petersburg, Russia; but on our western prairies it soon loses its lower branches, as it seems to be unable to withstand the hot and drying winds of that section in late sum mer and early autumn. In the eastern states, however, it does not have this fault, as the cooler and more humid air seems to better agree with it. Its scope and point of view must be determined before a stroke of actual work is done. This much done, the remainder is labor rather than difficulty. The lay-out of the enter prise cannot be made in a day. It is a matter of slow growth. One must have a mental picture of the entire field and must calculate the resources. The plan once perfected, it remains only to work out detail after detail, taking up the tasks as they come, not caring nor even daring to look forward to the work that piles mountain high farther down the alphabet. So far as the Cyclopedia of American Horticulture is concerned, the Editor had resolved and reviewed the enterprise for more than ten years. The first suggestion was a vague idea that a comprehensive work was needed. There were several hundred special works on American horticulture. Some subjects were well worked; others were untouched. There was no means of determining the extent of our wealth in cultivated plants. There were no suggestions, even, as to what that wealth might be. No survey had been made. Only a full inventory can tell us whether we are rich or poor; it gives us a scale by which to measure progress.
