The Indian uprisings (1857–58) against British rule in India represent an iconic period within the history of anti-colonial resistance. Numerous works have considered these historical events from British and Indian perspectives, but none have yet questioned how they were viewed by Britain’s foremost colonial rival in India, the French. The French Colonial Imagination examines how the potential for Britain to lose its most lucrative colony at the hands its own colonial “subjects” allowed French writers to envisage a world freed from British dominance. The uprisings offered the attractive possibility that France could undergo a colonial revival in the wake of British defeat, thereby reversing the devastating losses inflicted upon France’s former empire at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Notable among these losses was Britain’s decision (in the Treaty of 1814) to permanently reduce France’s presence in India to five small trading posts scattered around the periphery of British territory. The extent to which to the French colonial imagination of the nineteenth century was shaped by the memories of such defeats forms a primary concern of this monograph. This investigation into French responses to the Indian uprisings reveals that French colonial discourse was determined as much by its visions of the colonized “other,” as by the dominance of their British rivals. Drawing from journalistic, historical, political, and fictional texts written during Louis Napoleon’s Second Empire (1852–70) and in the early years of the Third Republic (1870–1944), The French Colonial Imagination shows how the uprisings gave French writers the opportunity to speak out against the rapacity of British colonialism and its treatment of colonized Indians, while simultaneously constructing a competing colonial discourse that would justify further expansion in North Africa and South East Asia. Standing at a crossroads between the “loss” of Ancien Régime’s empireand the Third Republic’s ideological investment in overseas expansion, this understudied period of colonial history reveals the centrality of loss, fracture, and political emasculation as core preoccupations haunting the French colonial discourse in its quest to regain cultural and ideological ascendancy over its greatest political enemy.

Ce volume des Cahiers de la SIELEC constitue les actes d’une journée d’étude et d’un colloque consacrés au reportage de presse en situation coloniale qui se sont tenus respectivement à l’université de Nice le 11 octobre 2012 et à l’université de Montpellier les 4, 5 et 6 juin 2014. Plusieurs études, ces dernières années, ont souligné l’importance du journalisme dans la formation d’un imaginaire culturel spécifique, particulièrement lié à l’expansion coloniale. Ce volume analyse quelques moments forts de cette littérature de reportage extrêmement variée et qui a si puissamment contribué à façonner l’imaginaire moderne. Les trois points suivants sont plus particulièrement abordés : d’abord, le lien entre reportage et littérature, puisque la presse reprend à son compte un imaginaire exotique que de nombreux récits de voyage et romans ont largement illustré, tandis que, dans le même temps, le reportage affiche souvent un désir de réalisme et doit donner des gages de véracité ; ensuite, le développement d’un imaginaire héroïque, à des fins de propagande et de popularisation du thème colonial sur fond d’atmosphère virile ; enfin, la collecte d’informations dont l’intention première est d’aider à connaître des peuples que l’on veut soumettre à l’hégémonie européenne, mais qui n’en conduit pas moins aussi parois à prendre ouvertement fait et cause pour les peuples colonisés. C’est donc à un ensemble de textes journalistiques riches, variés et témoignant de processus complexes, que sont consacrés les articles rassemblés dans ce volume des Cahiers de la SIELEC.

L'idéologie coloniale telle qu'elle s'est déployée au sein de l'espace germanophone au début du siècle dernier n'est-elle pas intimement liée au "désir de mythe" devant faire pièce à une certaine vision de la modernité ? Voilà la question à laquelle cherche à répondre cet ouvrage. Une première partie, intitulée "Contextes" est consacrée à une présentation factuelle du colonialisme allemand, à ses acteurs et à ses moyens de diffusion, surtout journalistiques, tout en s'attachant à présenter certaines interprétations du phénomène colonial. Une seconde partie, renouvelant les questions interprétatives, montre que l'imaginaire colonial allemand fut à l'origine de nombreuses productions spécifiques, relevant du mythe. Abordée à partir de travaux initiés par Pierre Brunei et développés par Gilbert Durand, l'approche privilégiée ici s'appuie sur les concepts opératoires de mythocritique et de "mythodologie", en vue de dégager les articulations de l'imaginaire colonial allemand, saisies comme idéologèmes" afin de marquer leur ancrage idéologique et politique. Pour l'essentiel, cet imaginaire semble se concentrer autour de trois grandes travées imaginatives que constituent "la nostalgie des origines", "la lutte entre le Bien et le Mal" et "le Grand Un", associé au "mythe du progrès indéfini". Ainsi, le retour à une Germanie idéalisée que doit permettre de réaliser l'implantation coloniale porte-t-il les germes d'une Allemagne repensée et réinventée outre-mer. La Volksgerneinschaft coloniale, enracinée dans un imaginaire völkisch doit permettre la rénovation de l'Allemagne wilhelminienne, perçue comme sclérosée par les coloniaux de toute obédience.

Religion in today’s Democratic Republic of Congo has many faces: from the overflowing seminaries and Marian shrines of the Catholic Church to the Islamic brotherhoods, from the healers of Kimban-guism to the televangelism of the booming Pentecostalist churches in the great cities, from the Orthodox communities of Kasai to the ‘invisible’ Mai Mai warriors in the brousse of Kivu. During the colonial period religion was no less central to people’s lives than it is today. More surprisingly, behind the seemingly smooth facade of missions linked closely to imperial power, faith and worship were already marked by diversity and dynamism, tying the Congo into broader African and global movements. The contributions in this book provide insight into the multifaceted history of the interaction between religion and colonization. The authors outline the institutional political framework, and focus on the challenge that old and new forms of slavery entailed for the missions. The atrocities committed at the time of the Congo Free State became an existential question for young Christian communities. In the Belgian Congo after 1908, more structural forms of colonial violence remained a key issue marking religious experiences. And yet, religion also acted as a bridge. The authors emphasize the role intermediaries such as catechists or medical assistants played in the African “appropriation” of Christianity. They examine the complex interaction with indigenous religious beliefs and practices, and zoom in on the part religions played in the independence movement, as well as on their reaction to independence itself. Coming at a moment when Belgium confronts its colonial past, this volume provides a timely reassessment of religion as a key factor.
