Yoga, tantra and other forms of Asian meditation are practised in modernized forms throughout the world today, but most introductions to Hinduism or Buddhism tell only part of the story of how they developed. This book is an interpretation of the history of Indic religions up to around 1200 CE, with particular focus on the development of yogic and tantric traditions. It assesses how much we really know about this period, and asks what sense we can make of the evolution of yogic and tantric practices, which were to become such central and important features of the Indic religious scene. Its originality lies in seeking to understand these traditions in terms of the total social and religious context of South Asian society during this period, including the religious practices of the general population with their close engagement with family, gender, economic life and other pragmatic concerns.

In spite of the common view of Buddhism as nondogmatic and tolerant, the historical record preserves many examples of Buddhist thinkers and movements that were banned as heretical or subversive. The San-chieh (Three Levels) was a popular and influential Chinese Buddhist movement during the Sui and T’ang periods, counting powerful statesmen, imperial princes, and even an empress, Empress Wu, among its patrons. In spite, or perhaps precisely because, of its proximity to power, the San-chieh movement ran afoul of the authorities and its teachings and texts were officially proscribed numerous times over a several-hundred-year history. Because of these suppressions San-chieh texts were lost and little information about its teachings or history is available. The present work, the first English study of the San-chieh movement, uses manuscripts discovered at Tun-huang to examine the doctrine and institutional practices of this movement in the larger context of Mahayana doctrine and practice. By viewing San-chieh in the context of Mahayana Buddhism, Hubbard reveals it to be far from heretical and thereby raises important questions about orthodoxy and canon in Buddhism. He shows that many of the hallmark ideas and practices of Chinese Buddhism find an early and unique expression in the San-chieh texts.

Unfortunate Destiny focuses on the roles played by nonhuman animals within the imaginative thought-world of Indian Buddhism, as reflected in pre-modern South Asian Buddhist literature. These roles are multifaceted, diverse, and often contradictory: In Buddhist doctrine and cosmology, the animal rebirth is a most "unfortunate destiny" (durgati), won through negative karma and characterized by a lack of intelligence, moral agency, and spiritual potential. In stories about the Buddha's previous lives, on the other hand, we find highly anthropomorphized animals who are wise, virtuous, endowed with human speech, and often critical of the moral shortcomings of humankind. In the life-story of the Buddha, certain animal characters serve as "doubles" of the Buddha, illuminating his nature through identification, contrast or parallelism with an animal "other." Relations between human beings and animals likewise range all the way from support, friendship, and near-equality to rampant exploitation, cruelty, and abuse. Perhaps the only commonality among these various strands of thought is a persistent impulse to use animals to clarify the nature of humanity itself--whether through similarity, contrast, or counterpoint. Buddhism is a profoundly human-centered religious tradition, yet it relies upon a dexterous use of the animal other to help clarify the human self. This book seeks to make sense of this process through a wide-ranging-exploration of animal imagery, animal discourse, and specific animal characters in South Asian Buddhist texts.

LỜI NÓI ĐẦU Phương pháp nghiên cứu, ngày nay hơn bao giờ hết, đã trở thành một trong những vấn đề trọng tâm không chỉ của các hoạt động mang tính học đường mà còn của tất cả mọi lãnh vực khác. Làm việc thiếu phương pháp thì thời gian, công sức, năng lực có thể hao tốn rất nhiều nhưng thành quả đạt được chẳng là bao nhiêu. Về phương diện kết quả, sự thành công của con người có thể nhờ vào sự nỗ lực, phấn đấu trong kiên trì và không gián đoạn. Về phương diện hiệu quả, sự phấn đấu và kiên trì vẫn chưa gọi là đủ. Mức độ thành công tùy thuộc rất nhiều vào phương pháp hay kỹ năng làm việc. Có nỗ lực, kiên trì, bền bỉ theo đuổi mục đích nhưng lại thiếu phương pháp thì hiệu suất công việc khó có thể hay không thể đạt được như mong muốn. Vì vậy, phương pháp đóng vai trò vô song trong việc nâng cao hiệu suất của công việc nói chung, công tác khảo cứu nói riêng. Nhờ biết phương pháp khảo cứu, nhà nghiên cứu có thể đầu tư thời gian làm việc ít nhưng lại thâu hoạch được thành quả công việc cao. Nhanh - hiệu quả - chất lượng là ba đặc tính của một khảo cứu có phương pháp. Tại các nước tiên tiến, nhất là các nước chịu ảnh hưởng của hệ thống giáo dục Mỹ, phương pháp nghiên cứu là một trong những bộ môn được đưa vào giảng dạy ở cấp cử nhân. Tại các nước chịu ảnh hưởng của nền giáo dục Anh, phương pháp nghiên cứu chỉ được giới thiệu ở cấp phó tiến sĩ.(1) Nhờ được đào luyện về phương pháp nghiên cứu từ cấp cử nhân, sinh viên ngoại quốc đã bắt đầu dấn thân vào con đường nghiên cứu đúng nghĩa, ở nhóm tuổi trẻ trung đầy sức lực và sáng tạo, để cho ra đời những tác phẩm vô song và bất hủ. Lúc này, sinh viên không còn nghe và tin vào những gì thầy cô giáo giảng dạy trên lớp một cách thụ động và không đặt vấn đề như ở cấp trung học trở xuống nữa. Đối với sinh viên nắm vững về phương pháp nghiên cứu, kiến thức hay thông tin của thầy cô giáo cũng chỉ là một trong những nguồn tài liệu tham khảo như bao nhiêu nguồn tài liệu tham khảo khác. Kiến thức của sinh viên được phát triển và lớn dần do biết cách tham khảo tài liệu, có phương pháp tư duy và viết một cách độc lập và sáng tạo. Trong khi đó, hệ thống giáo dục Anh làm cho sinh viên chậm phát triển hơn về phương diện dấn thân vào con đường sáng tác độc lập, so với hệ thống Mỹ, chỉ vì do phương pháp nghiên cứu được giới thiệu quá trễ! Tại Việt Nam ta, do thiếu tài liệu tham khảo, bộ môn phương pháp nghiên cứu hiếm khi được triển khai ở các cấp học cử nhân và cao học một cách chính thức. Thỉnh thoảng có một số trường đưa nó vào giảng dạy ở cấp cao học hoặc phó tiến sĩ. Có lẽ chính vì thế, có quá ít các sáng tác của ta đạt được tiêu chuẩn quốc tế về ba phương diện: phương pháp nghiên cứu, phong cách trình bày và chất lượng nghiên cứu. Trong khi, phần lớn tác phẩm còn lại, dù đạt yêu cầu về chất lượng, nhưng không đạt tiêu chuẩn về phương pháp nghiên cứu và cách thức trình bày. Một tác phẩm có nhiều giá trị về phương diện khám phá nhiều vấn đề mới mẻ trong một lãnh vực nghiên cứu nào đó nhưng để xuất hiện quá nhiều lỗi về chính tả, văn phạm, về cách trình bày cước chú và thư mục không đúng cách v.v… sẽ có thể làm cho độc giả khó tánh nghi ngờ về chất lượng nghiên cứu vốn có của nó. Một tác giả chu đáo rõ ràng không thể để cho các thiếu sót này, dù nhỏ nhặt, làm phiền và giảm uy tín chất lượng sáng tác của mình. Trong chiều hướng đó, quyển sách nhỏ này ra đời với một hy vọng khiêm tốn rằng nó sẽ góp phần nào đó trong việc san bằng các khoảng cách thiếu hụt về phương pháp nghiên cứu tại Việt Nam. Tập sách này nhằm cung cấp cho các bạn sinh viên mới bắt đầu dấn thân vào sự nghiệp nghiên cứu hay cho những người ham thích sáng tác nói chung, những chỉ dẫn cần thiết về các mặc ước mang tính quốc tế về viết tắt, về phép chấm câu, về phép viết hoa và nghiêng, về các bộ phận của một bài khảo luận hay luận án, về cách trình bày các bộ phận đó, về cách đọc và ghi chép tài liệu, về cách soạn thảo và viết bản thảo, về cách ghi cước chú, về cách trình bày thư mục tham khảo, phần phụ lục, bảng giải thích thuật ngữ, bảng chú dẫn mục từ, và về cách biên tập và đánh giá bản thảo trước khi xuất bản. Tác giả mong rằng nó sẽ là người “đầy tớ” trung thành của các bạn sinh viên và nghiên cứu sinh. Để cho các vấn đề trình bày được dễ hiểu và dễ sử dụng, tác giả đã chọn cách viết và trình bày “phân chia thành đề mục”, không đặt nặng vấn đề triết lý hay phân tích các nội dung. Tác giả cũng đã ý thức và hạn chế một cách tối đa việc sử dụng các thuật ngữ của khoa học này, ngoại trừ những trường hợp không thể tìm được các từ thông thường khác có ý nghĩa tương đương với chúng. Tập sách này, thực ra, chỉ là một nỗ lực khiêm tốn trong việc đáp ứng những kiến thức mang tính cẩm nang về cách viết và soạn thảo bài khảo luận, luận văn và luận án cho các sinh viên mới bắt đầu dấn thân vào nghiên cứu và những người bắt đầu chưa có kinh nghiệm. Cho nên, mặc dù tác giả đã có nhiều cố gắng, tập sách vẫn không sao tránh khỏi những hạn chế nhất định. Tác giả mong đón nhận được những lời chỉ giáo và góp ý chân tình của các bậc thức giả cũng như người sử dụng sách, để cho các tái bản về sau, nó thật sự xứng đáng đón nhận được niềm tin cậy của quý bạn. In den letzten 100 Jahren hat der Buddhismus zusammen mit anderen asiatischen und indischen Traditionen in steigendem Maße in Europa und Amerika an Präsenz gewonnen. Begriffe wie Nirvana, Karma oder Vorstellungen über Wiedergeburt haben längst Eingang gefunden in den Formenbestand westlicher Welt- und Daseinserschließung, werden allerdings oft nicht angemessen verstanden oder bleiben reduziert auf Klischees, was eine fruchtbare Auseinandersetzung und damit die Möglichkeit einer wirklichen Bereicherung des eigenen Denkens erschwert. Der Schwerpunkt der Darstellung liegt daher auf dem Verstehen des Buddhismus und - in entsprechend systematischer Perspektive - auf den damit verbundenen hermeneutischen Grundlagen sowie auf einer Explikation relevanter Faktoren interkulturellen Verstehens.
