Was Grand Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz' plan for naval expansion and the development of a "risk fleet" as a way to position Wilhelmine Germany as a world power to rival Britain so unique? This comparative study of the modern naval strategy of Germany, Britain, France, and the United States seeks to answer that question. First, Hobson is the only naval scholar to simultaneously compare the "Tirpitz Plan" with plans of the other leading nations of that time. Second, Hobson also interacts with how other scholars have assessed the complex interplay between naval history--both in and outside Germany--maritime law, and naval strategy. Hobson offers a unique interpretation of the causes and objectives of the German Imperial Navy at the end of the nineteenth century, forces that ultimately led to the First World War.

The Rise And Fall Of A Socialist Welfare State written by Manfred G. Schmidt and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-15 with Political Science categories.

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of social policy in the German Democratic Republic (GDR, 1949-1990), followed by an analysis of the “Social Union”, the transformation of social policy in the process of German unification in 1990. Schmidt’s analysis of the GDR also depicts commonalities and differences between the welfare state in East and West Germany as well as in other East European and Western countries. He concludes that the GDR was unable to cope with the trade-off between ambitious social policy goals and a deteriorating economic performance. Ritter embeds his analysis of the Social Union in a general study of German unification, its international circumstances and its domestic repercussions (1989-1994). He argues that social policy played a pivotal role in German unification, and that there was no alternative to extending the West German welfare state to the East. Ritter, a distinguished historian, bases his contribution on an award-winning study for which he drew on archival sources and interviews with key actors. Schmidt is a distinguished political scientist.

The treaty of Rapallo, concluded in 1922 between Germany and the Soviet Union, the two vanquished powers of the Great War, ranks high among the diplomatic coups de surprise of the twentieth century. Its real importance, however, lies in the repercussions of the alliance on the subsequent policies of the two victorious powers, Britain and France. This study examines the impact of Rapallo on British foreign policy between 1922 and 1934, when the German-Soviet relationship had virtually ended. The "ghost of Rapallo" is the central theme of this story, as ever since the treaty's conclusion Rapallo has been a byword for Soviet-German secret and potentially dangerous collaboration. This book describes how the British viewed the Rapallo co-operation, how they dealt with this special relationship, and how the lingering memory of Rapallo affected British policy for decades to come. While examining a particular aspect of international relations it throws additional light on broader topics of European relations in the 1920s and early 1930s. Dr STEPHANIE SALZMANN completed her PhD at Trinity Hall, Cambridge.

Riane Eisler’s Handbook is a beautifully and concisely written book about one of the most important social movements of our times. She presents the case for the ERA as a matter of simple justice. The Equal Rights Handbook has been hailed as: "...a wonderful book. You’ve done an enormous job in winning the fight for equality. Your work will be used, by me and by others, in this long hard struggle for simple decency – the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment." -Alan Alda "Riane Eisler has written the definitive book on the ERA." -Erica Jong "At last the significance and impact of ERA as law has been made clear by an attorney and legal authority who is also a woman, a mother, and who can write!" -Carol Burnett "...demonstrates that ERA is the missing link in our struggle to become a fully democratic nation. It is basic reading for every American woman." -Nancy Neuman, ERA Chair, League of Women Voters "...clears up the distortions leveled against the Equal Rights Amendment and provides essential information on organizing and fund-raising to promote equality for women." – Ruth Hinerfeld, President, League of Women Voters "...answers the misleading charges about ERA. More importantly, it answers the hard questions raised by those whose minds can be changed. At a crucial time, the Equal Rights Handbook is a necessary companion to help win ratification." -David Cohen, President, Common Cause
