L’interesse di Hegel per questioni esteticoartistiche non è circoscritto esclusivamente alle sue celebri lezioni di estetica di Heidelberg (1818) e di Berlino (1820/21; 1823; 1826; 1828/29), ma è alquanto stratificato ed eterogeneo. Ricostruire tale confronto è l’intento del presente volume, nel quale per la prima volta sono presentati in lingua italiana una serie di materiali – appunti, recensioni, excerpta – che documentano il variegato interesse di Hegel per l’arte e per la storia dell’arte. Vengono inoltre riproposti in una nuova traduzione alcuni testi noti, come Il più antico programma di sistema dell’idealismo tedesco, il saggio sul Wallenstein e i paragrafi dedicati all’arte nell’Enciclopedia delle scienze filosofiche in compendio (1817 e 1830). Anche le recensioni a Humboldt del 1827 (Sul famoso episodio del Mahābhārata noto come Bhagavad Gītā, Berlino 1826) e a Solger del 1828 (Scritti postumi ed epistolario, a cura di L. Tieck e F. von Raumer, Lipsia 1826) sono state nuovamente tradotte e corredate da note esplicative.

Pubblicato nel 1854, ampliato e continuamente aggiornato nell’arco di sedici edizioni, Il bello musicale è il testo rivoluzionario che determina lo spartiacque tra vecchia e nuova musicologia e che ha dato inizio all’estetica musicale moderna. Tradizionalmente considerato un “formalista”, una lettura più attenta mostra che Hanslick in realtà è un complesso bacino di confluenza alimentato dal Kant della Critica della facoltà di giudizio e dallo Hegel dell’Estetica, come da Hoffmann e da Vischer. Hanslick, in quest’opera, mette in questione lo statuto dell’opera d’arte musicale nella sua autonomia e nel suo valore, formulando un nuovo orizzonte concettuale che ha aperto la cultura musicale novecentesca e appare ancora oggi vitale, e conduce una martellante critica dell’antica idea che la musica “debba esibire sentimenti” che influiscono sull’animo dell’ascoltatore, agisca insomma come una sorta di “oppio sonoro”. Egli rivendica invece la necessità di una considerazione “estetica” e non psicologica della musica, che colga e valorizzi la specifica “bellezza musicale”, che consiste nell’universo dei suoni e nella loro dinamica articolazione artistica come “forme sonore in movimento”.

Si raccolgono qui la maggior parte dei contributi presentati in occasione di un incontro su "Arte e critica in Italia nella prima metà del Novecento" tenuto nel maggio del 2006 presso il Dipartimento di Storia delle Arti e dello Spettacolo dell'Università di Firenze.
