La teoria infatti che io credo di poter applicare alla metrica nostra, non solo comprende tutte le forme universalmente cono scinte, ma apre la strada ad esplicarne gradatamente molte altre, pa recchie delle quali, come vedremo, sono gia mature, o lo saranno tra poco, da potersi adoperare senza pericolo. Io cerco di dare una teoria ra zionale, e non la cavo da un'idea cervellotica e individuale, mala conforto con gli argomenti obbiettivi della pratica del tempo passato: non sosti tuisco l'arbitrio, ne voglio creare una metrica nuova; esamino e studio le leggi dei versi nostri e scruto quale sia o sia per essere il loro procedi mento e il loro sviluppo naturale.Non vi ha dubbio che la difficolta piu seria di tutte sta nel porre il princ1p1o sommo, secondo il quale si devono poi classificare e disporre i fenomeni singoli nella trattazione particolare. Ma in cio noi siamo ammae strati dall'esperienza dei trattatisti antichi e moderni, e dagli errori nei quali sono caduti; che sovente accade che il traviamento stesso nasconda un principio di verita, che fu soltanto male applicato.Cosi rettamente Aristosseno aveva fondato una teoria scientifica delle arti musiche, quando la musica era ancora legata alla poesia ed alla danza; e la sua dottrina del tempo e del ritmo e il fondamento razionale e naturale della metrica greca. Ma subito dopo di lui il legame delle tre arti si sciolse, la poesia si separo dalla musica: la metrica, come doveva, prevalse alla ritmica, e cominciando dagli Alessandrini giu giu attraverso a tutta la letteratura romana, non si parlo quasi d'altro che di quantita delle sillabe, quantita poi essa stessa alcune volte di un va lore convenzionale e arbitrario, essendo perduto l'elemento musicale che; ne determinava la vera misura. A cio tenne dietro per necessaria conse guenza la divisione arbitraria dei piedi: divisione fatta alla pazza; basti dire che per os. Il pentametro elegiaco fu diviso in due dattili, uno spondeo e due anapesti, l'asclepiadeo in un epitrito quarto, un antispasto e un digiambo, il saffico in un cretico, un ionico a maiore, ed un ditrocheo: procedevano tanto alla cieca da non badare nemmeno alle cesure del verso.
