Pubblicato postumo nel 1867 a Firenze con il titolo Le confessioni di un ottuagenario (per volere dell'editore, che non desiderava farlo passare per una "pappolata politica"), il romanzo Le confessioni d'un italiano fu iniziato nel dicembre 1857 e terminato, per quanto possiamo dedurre da una lettera dell'autore, il 16 agosto 1858. La vicenda si risolve nella narrazione della vita dell'80enne Carlo Altoviti, intenzionato a lasciare ai posteri una diretta testimonianza degli eventi susseguitisi dalla metà del XVIII secolo alla metà del XIX. Le confessioni d'un italiano è il romanzo maggiore di Ippolito Nievo, ma solo nel 1931 se ne ebbe una versione critica, a cura di F. Palazzi, edita col titolo originale.
