Alvin C. York (1887--1964) -- devout Christian, conscientious objector, and reluctant hero of World War I -- is one of America's most famous and celebrated soldiers. Known to generations through Gary Cooper's Academy Award-winning portrayal in the 1941 film Sergeant York, York is credited with the capture of 132 German soldiers on October 8, 1918, in the Meuse-Argonne region of France -- a deed for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Here is George S. Patton Jr.'s official war diary with daily entries from September 1918 to the days leading up to the Armistice in November. He kept it while commanding the 304th Tank Brigade in World War I. Also included is the war diary of Ranulf Compton, one of his battalion tank commanders, with daily entries from mid-August to mid-October. Both diaries cover in detail tank operations at the Battle of St. Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, providing a candid look at the successes and challenges of early tank units in combat. Compton's diary entries are particularly intriguing because he is a lesser-known figure historically but one who played a critical role in the final days of the war. Sereno Brett, Patton's other battalion commander, had assumed command of the brigade after Patton was wounded the last week in September. Compton, in turn, assumed command of all the brigade tanks at the front. His role as commander of the fighting tanks makes his diary entries especially important. Once Patton was medically evacuated off the battlefield, his knowledge of tank operations was strictly second-hand. But Compton was now eyewitness to several more weeks of some of the toughest fighting of the war. The contrast between Patton's and Compton's diary entries is also intriguing for another reason. On a personal level, Patton had a vested interest in the success of the early tank, having been an early proponent and personally involved in its development. But Compton had no such investment and therefore his daily observations, in contrast to Patton's, contain a more unvarnished assessment of the early tank.

Uel Blank's primary career focused upon economic and community development. Much of it involved extension and classroom teaching and research in the Land-Grant universities of Missouri, Michigan and Minnesota. He also served as an economic development consultant to businesses and communities in the Midwestern United States and overseas---in the Middle East, the Baltic States of Estonia and Latvia, and in Post-Soviet Russia. In contrast to his present career, his first job after undergraduate college was as an industrial chemist. He also covered 100,000 miles of the Pacific Ocean aboard a destroyer in World War II. In even sharper contrast, he grew up on the family farm where, despite the on-rushing events of the Twentieth Century, life retained many of the semi-subsistence characteristics of the previous century. These wide-ranging experiences equip him well to bring to life the events and people recorded in the diaries that provide the basis for this book's narrative.

War is often characterised as one percent terror, 99 per cent boredom. Whilst much ink has been spilt on the one per cent, relatively little work has been directed toward the other 99 per cent of a soldier's time. As such, this book will be welcomed by those seeking a fuller understanding of what makes soldiers endure war, and how they cope with prolonged periods of inaction. It explores the issue of military boredom and investigates how soldiers spent their time when not engaged in battle, work or training through a study of their creative, imaginative and intellectual lives. It examines the efforts of military authorities to provide solutions to military boredom (and the problem of discipline and morale) through the provisioning of entertainment and education, but more importantly explores the ways in which soldiers responded to such efforts, arguing that soldiers used entertainment and education in ways that suited them. The focus in the book is on Australians and their experiences, primarily during the First World War, but with subsequent chapters taking the story through the Second World War to the Vietnam War. This focus on a single national group allows questions to be raised about what might (or might not) be exceptional about the experiences of a particular national group, and the ways national identity can shape an individual's relationship and engagement with education and entertainment. It can also suggest the continuities and changes in these experiences through the course of three wars. The story of Australians at war illuminates a much broader story of the experience of war and people's responses to war in the twentieth century.

From the Russian revolutions of 1917 to the end of the Civil War in 1920, Woodrow Wilson's administration sought to oppose the Bolsheviks in a variety of covert ways. Drawing on previously unavailable American and Russian archival material, David Foglesong chronicles both sides of this secret war and reveals a new dimension to the first years of the U.S.-Soviet rivalry. Foglesong explores the evolution of Wilson's ambivalent attitudes toward socialism and revolution before 1917 and analyzes the social and cultural origins of American anti-Bolshevism. Constrained by his espousal of the principle of self-determination, by idealistic public sentiment, and by congressional restrictions, Wilson had to rely on secretive methods to affect the course of the Russian Civil War. The administration provided covert financial and military aid to anti-Bolshevik forces, established clandestine spy networks, concealed the purposes of limited military expeditions to northern Russia and Siberia, and delivered ostensibly humanitarian assistance to soldiers fighting to overthrow the Soviet government. In turn, the Soviets developed and secretly funded a propaganda campaign in the United States designed to mobilize public opposition to anti-Bolshevik activity, promote American-Soviet economic ties, and win diplomatic recognition from Washington.
