Todo lo que le rodea son conjeturas de difícil constatación: desde su nombre, Longo, hasta su procedencia, la isla de Lesbos, pasando incluso por la época en que vivió, muy probablemente el siglo ii a. C., aunque se ha llegado a creer que pudo vivir en fecha más tardía. Sin embargo, para leer una pequeña joya intemporal como Dafnis y Cloe poco importan estos detalles, porque el lector puede disfrutar de este elegante y sensual relato prescindiendo de ellos. La novela narra el nacimiento del amor y la pasión de dos jóvenes pastores en el marco idílico de la campiña griega. Las peripecias que viven estos adolescentes son mínimas, por debajo de la descripción de sus sentimientos y la exaltación de la naturaleza, que acaba asumiendo un papel principal. Dafnis y Cloe es uno de los pocos ejemplos de novela griega antigua que conservamos y quizá el mejor. Máximo exponente de la novela pastoril, la importancia que le concedieron sus contemporáneos no fue tanta como la que se le dio en toda Europa a partir del Renacimiento y que se ha prolongado en el tiempo con toda justicia.
