I denne bog gennemgås moralens historie fra de tidligste civilisationer over den europæiske industrielle revolution og til nutiden. Der argumenteres for det synspunkt, at vækst i samfundsmæssig kompleksitet ikke har noget med moralsk vækst at gøre. Vore evner til moralske følelser er udviklet i de hundredtusinder af år, hvor vore forfædre strejfede om på stepperne i små flokke, hvor alle kendte alle, og alle var afhængige af hinanden. Det var den slags følelser, der gjorde flokkene i stand til at holde sammen. Hvor følelserne alene ikke kunne finde vej, kunne fornuften hjælpe. Men klodens mest frugtbare floddale overbefolkedes. Og for at opretholde tilstrækkelig produktion begyndte menneskene at dyrke jorden og lave arbejdsdelinger, først og fremmest mellem by og land. Men samtidig med, at det gjorde dem mere afhængige af hinanden, gjorde det dem også mere fremmede for hinanden. Evnerne til at engagere sig i hinanden afstumpedes. Derfor måtte menneskene kompensere med civilisering: stater, love, ordensmagter etc. Civiliseringen havde altså intet med moral at gøre. Den instituerede kold, kalkulerende fornuft, hvor de moralske følelser ikke længere rakte. Med lov og ordensmagt blev fornuften revet løs fra sin rolle som følelsernes tjener. Nu blev det den, der bestemte. Men det er følelserne, der giver fornuften dens retning, uden dem har den intet kompas. Fremmedheden mellem os er vokset op gennem historien, efterhånden som arbejdsdelingen er tiltaget. Og risikoen for moralske kollaps og sociale katastrofer er steget i samme takt. Derfor er nutidens moralske kollaps langt værre end fortidens. Derfor kulminerede den industrielle revolution i to verdenskrige. I bogen kaldes endestationen for denne tendens i udviklingen for "den sociale varmedød". Skal dens virkning neutraliseres, vil det kræve meget af menneskeheden. Men først og fremmest må vi lære at forstå den.
