Excerpt from Daily Life and Work in India Tms book owes its origin to the suggestion of some good friends of Missions who thought that a work describing the ordinary life of people in India, and the different forms of Mission work as it is carried on amongst them, could not fail to interest both young and old. In carrying out this suggestion, I have given a series of sketches of the city of Calcutta and the district, with its Euro pean and native population. I have described the homes, schools, manners and customs of the people, their religious faiths and practices; and spoken too of some of their temples and other holy places. I have also attempted to show how the mission aries work and travel as they seek to unfold before the myriads of Hindus the unsearchable riches of Christ. The writing of this work has given me intense pleasure, as it has compelled me to live over again some of the happiest years of my life, and brought back to view scenes and people that had almost faded from memory. I can only wish that my readers may have as great delight in forming the acquaintance of some of these, as I have hadin recalling them to mind. If, in addition to this, it awakens their sympathies on behalf of India's millions who sit in darkness and in the region and shadow of death, and leads them to pray and work for their enlightenment, I shall be truly thankful that it was undertaken. Excerpt from India and Daily Life in Bengal I am issuing this third edition because the second edition is exhausted, and there seems to be a demand for such a book. There are more pages in this edition than in the second. I have given the latest reports on the revenue of the country, and also the constitution of the new Legislative Council of the viceroy, and the latest revised Protestant missionary statistics. I have briefly discussed British rule in India as I have seen it and know it. During our last term of service the unrest was at its height, and we were in the very storm-center of the cyclone. This is referred to from the standpoint from which I have viewed it. I have tried to present the facts and conditions in a plain, simple manner, so that any one can understand the situation as far as possible without actually being on the ground. The book was issued in the first place to answer questions regarding that great country, which every writer consulted took for granted that the people knew, but which, as a matter of fact, in general they very little understood. Excerpt from Every-Day Life in South India, or the Story of Coopooswamey: An Autobiography You can at least do this, ' said he. Write a complete account of all that you can remember of your history and experiences. Make it as picturesque and graphic as you can. Recall and fill in all the conversations that you can remember, and I will correct and arrange your manuscript; I will reject what seems to me unsuitable, and if I can, from my own knowledge of the habits and customs of the people, add anything to your narrative that will make it more clear and acceptable to British and American readers, I will do so.' TO this proposal I agreed. Every week I brought some sheets to Mr. Knox, which he afterwards read to me with alterations and additions of his own; and then we criticised and corrected each other's work. Excerpt from Corporate Life in Ancient India The spirit of co-operation has contributed more than anything else to the present highly developed stage of civilisation. The gigantic ex periments in popular government and the huge economic organisations spreading over the whole world, such as we see to-day all around us, have made the modern age what it is. The corporate activity to which they owe their origin and the present high level of success, may therefore be justly looked upon as the distinctive element in the culture of the day. It is rightly believed that no nation that lacks in this essential ele ment of culture can hope to keep pace with the progress of the world. Excerpt from The Real India I Accepted an invitation, without which I would not have embarked upon such an undertaking, to write this book because among the many works lately published on India, most are avowedly written from the point of view of the tourist, and many, avowedly or otherwise, for party and political purposes, while others have their origin in disappointment or resentment, and some are frankly seditious and disloyal. It seemed to me a duty to accept, while so many and great slanders upon our fellow-countrymen in India are published, and while the real India and its inhabitants are overlooked amidst the din of controversy, the screams of sedition from Bengal, the cries of the party of the Hindoo Congress, and the writings and speeches of such as, even if they have visited India, were there delivered over blindfolded and tongue-tied to the interested interpreter. The first chapter contains a sketch of the past history of India, showing the perpetual state of warfare and oppression which existed up to the time of the Mogul Empire, and how little good government was enjoyed by the people during the latter period which is now represented by agitators as the Golden Age. Excerpt from The Web of Indian Life A house of my own, in which to eat, sleep, and conduct a girls' school, and full welcome accorded at any hour of day or night that I might choose to invade the privacy of a group of women friends hard by these were the conditions under which I made my entrance into Hindu life in the city of Calcutta. I came when the great autumn feast of the Mother was past I was there at the ending of the winter, when plague broke out in our midst, and the streets at night were thronged with seething multitudes who sang strange litanies and went half mad with religious excitement; I remained through the terrific heat, when activity became a burden, and only one's Hindu friends understood how to live; I left my home for a time when the tropical rains had begun, and in the adjoining roads the cab horses were up to their girths in water hour after hour.
