Ancient religions are definitely complex systems of gods, which resist our understanding. Divine names provide fundamental keys to gain access to the multiples ways gods were conceived, characterized, and organized. Among the names given to the gods many of them refer to spaces: cities, landscapes, sanctuaries, houses, cosmic elements. They reflect mental maps which need to be explored in order to gain new knowledge on both the structure of the pantheons and the human agency in the cultic dimension. By considering the intersection between naming and mapping, this book opens up new perspectives on how tradition and innovation, appropriation and creation play a role in the making of polytheistic and monotheistic religions. Far from being confined to sanctuaries, in fact, gods dwell in human environments in multiple ways. They move into imaginary spaces and explore the cosmos. By proposing a new and interdiciplinary angle of approach, which involves texts, images, spatial and archeaeological data, this book sheds light on ritual practices and representations of gods in the whole Mediterranean, from Italy to Mesopotamia, from Greece to North Africa and Egypt. Padroni del mondo, garanzia e tutela della sicurezza di tutti, gli imperatori romani erano soverchiati dagli obblighi e dai doveri. Eppure una parte importante della loro vita era dedicata all'otium. Cos'era questo tempo libero che si concedevano? Com'era la vita quotidiana degli imperatori lontano da Roma, nelle loro sontuose ville? A prima vista, l'otium, il riposo, non si confà a un imperatore: la sua è una carica che non prevede interruzioni; su di lui grava il peso del mondo; la sua veglia protegge il sonno di tutti e la sua operosità assicura l'otium degli altri. Eppure, per molti imperatori la routine quotidiana era ordinatamente scandita da riposi, letture e pratiche ludiche. Anzi, l'otium era così importante che finiva per diventare un metro di giudizio: Plinio elogiava Traiano come cacciatore e timoniere perché nel suo ritemprarsi rivelava il suo vero carattere. Al contrario, le giornate dei cattivi imperatori, come Nerone, erano invase dai bagordi, al punto da fagocitare tutto il loro operato.Seguiremo la vita quotidiana degli imperatori nelle loro proprietà nella cintura verde che circondava Roma (gli horti) o mentre si muovevano tra le ville del Lazio e della Campania, anche se neanche lì incombenze e preoccupazioni cessavano di perseguitarli. Augusto, dopo il pasto di mezzogiorno, con indosso vestiti e scarpe, si riposava un po' con una mano sugli occhi. Se la notte si svegliava per colpa delle preoccupazioni, chiamava i novellieri a leggere e ad allietarlo. Vespasiano, invece, dopo aver letto la corrispondenza e i rapporti dei funzionari, faceva entrare gli amici, andava a passeggio in lettiga o si concedeva il riposo con una concubina.
