The word conservation, when used in the context of the preservation of built heritage, implies an intrinsically complex concept that evolved over time, since it has been influenced by the perception of history throughout time. This volume emphasises why an understanding of the cultural evolution of the conservation approach must be considered a prerequisite for architects and engineers if they are to cooperate in full harmony with historic-artistic culture for the preservation of global built heritage. In particular, the volume highlights how, during the second half of the last century, the preservation process also involved engineering – the science of making practical applications of knowledge – which, for a long time, made an uncritical use of techniques and materials and devised interventions on historical heritage that were heavily invasive. The volume also devotes special attention to the problems related to seismic risk, to which Italy, Greece and Portugal are particularly prone. Problems that emerge during the crisis and reconstruction phases are dealt with in detail, as is scheduled maintenance, as this latter approach always constitutes an improvement in the performance of the monument and is the most appropriate tool for the conservation of the built heritage. Finally, the volume collects examples of building restoration with case studies of many outstanding monuments. The work will appeal to professionals and academics in the broader fields of civil engineering (both geotechnical and structural engineering), architecture, art history, the history of architecture, restoration and cultural heritage management. Nella complessità del dibattito contemporaneo sul restauro, uno dei modi per favorire l’avanzamento della ricerca sembra possa essere quello del confronto diretto e aperto tra diversi interlocutori, in cui porre sul tappeto della discussione i nodi problematici con cui il settore disciplinare attualmente si confronta. E, attraverso queste esperienze, provare a circoscrivere i problemi e a definirne i contorni, a focalizzare gli elementi di divergenza e gli assunti comuni, a chiarire con linearità quale si crede debbano essere le finalità, i metodi, gli strumenti, i limiti del progetto di conservazione, cercando di prefigurare scenari diversi. In questo caso, dall’apporto delle alte competenze degli intervistati emerge la volontà di cercare una specificità della disciplina collettiva ed affermata, premessa per definire una politica comune capace di interagire in modo più incisivo nel mondo attuale. Oltre che sulle problematiche relative ai fondamenti teorici, si legge una ricerca di condivisione di vedute anche sulle problematiche concrete, nella volontà di trovare soluzioni possibili, reali ed efficaci alle singole questioni. Tra queste: la distanza tra elaborazione teorica e professionalità, la diffusione coordinata delle conoscenze e dei risultati delle ricerche, il ruolo e le difficoltà dell’architetto restauratore, la formazione universitaria e quella che riguarda gli altri ambiti professionali coinvolti nella disciplina, le questioni economiche e politiche legate alla tutela. Temi in cui le diversità di vedute che certo permangono, costituiscono di fatto una ricchezza data dalla pluralità di sensibilità ed esperienze. Chiara Lumia (Palermo 1964) architetto, ha conseguito il titolo di dottore di ricerca in Conservazione dei Beni Architettonici e Ambientali presso il Dipartimento PAU dell’Università di Reggio Calabria. Dopo avere collaborato ai corsi di Restauro architettonico della Facoltà di Architettura di Palermo e di Reggio Calabria, attualmente è docente a contratto della cattedra di Laboratorio di restauro dei monumenti e di Orientamento contemporaneo delle teorie del restauro presso l’ateneo di Palermo; dal 2001 è docente nel curriculum in Conservazione e Restauro della SUPSI di Lugano, dove tiene i corsi di Storia delle tecniche realizzative e manutentive, Teorie e storia del restauro e Tematiche del dibattito contemporaneo. È autrice di saggi sulla storia e le teorie del restauro, con riferimento, anche, alle problematiche di conoscenza e di conservazione delle pratiche costruttive siciliane e alla storia della tutela in Canton Ticino.

Il genio delle arti: storie e interpretazioni - collana diretta da Marcello Fagiolo Questo libro è frutto del lavoro di un Architetto che sa bene in cosa consista il “mestiere” del restauratore di Architettura, in quanto discendente di Capomastri, Musicisti, Pittori, Architetti; imparò i rudimenti del mestiere in una Facoltà di Architettura di grande qualità (quella di Roma) negli anni '50 e nello studio del proprio Padre, architetto direttore dei lavori e urbanista. L'Autore si considera un vero Restauratore poiché esercita il mestiere da più di 45 anni avendo restaurato per la Soprintendenza di Roma monumenti importanti come le chiese di Piazza del Popolo, il chiostro di S. Maria della Pace, il tempietto borrominiano di S. Giovanni in Oleo e in seguito tanti altri disseminati nel territorio nazionale, dal Piemonte alla Sicilia. Un “mestiere”, quello del restauratore, che svolge ancor oggi nel cantiere del Museo Egizio di Torino (opera di Guarino Guarini, di Garove, di Talucchi, e, quando sarà terminato, anche sua), con una continuità disciplinare tra la Storia e l'intervento di Restauro che pochi possono vantare. Con la “pratica” del mestiere che può avere solo chi proceda dallo studio dei documenti storici e delle tecniche costruttive del cantiere fino alla sua trasformazione in un edificio munito di un'altra destinazione rispetto a quella originaria, avendo avuto a che fare con tutte le fasi di numerosi Concorsi internazionali di progettazione, dalla Basilica palladiana di Vicenza alla Venaria Reale presso Torino. A cominciare dalla costituzione del Cantiere, ai rapporti con le imprese e coi loro operai, nonché ai rapporti con le istituzioni preposte alla Tutela: le Soprintendenze ed i sommi gradi del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali, ogni volta direttamente interessati a quei restauri, approvati dopo istruttive discussioni negli uffici e sul cantiere. Il libro mette dunque a diposizione del lettore una trentina di progetti e documenti di Restauro di monumenti di diversa dimensione realizzati in quasi cinquant'anni (dalla Fontana Maggiore di Perugia alla Venaria Reale al Teatro Carignano a Torino), accompagnati dalle fotografie delle fasi principali della realizzazione, al fine di mostrarne il percorso effettuato grazie alle mani della gente che contribuí ai lavori, divenuta nel corso di essi tanto affine all'Autore, e viceversa, quanto lo sono i concertisti di un'Orchestra nei riguardi del loro Direttore.
