Proprio dopo che Nietzsche ebbe proclamato «la morte di Dio» e tutto, anche le parole fondamentali – io, Dio, padre, madre, felicità, libertà – sembrò sgretolarsi in una sconnessa miriade di piani, proprio allora la cultura scoprì Dante la cui eco risuona, per non citare che pochi nomi, tra Eliot e Beckett, tra Montale, Levi e molti altri. Ricordando a ciascuno che cosa significa essere uomini, che la libertà è un dono rischioso e va meritato ogni giorno, che il Paradiso può essere qui e ora, che l’Inferno si annida ovunque, che bastano un gesto o una lacrima a salvare una vita. Che l’indicibile parla con la voce della poesia e la poesia parla con la voce di noi uomini. Che tutti siamo storia e apparteniamo alla storia, ma non tutto finisce con la storia. Che possiamo subirla o tentare di modificarla, magari scrivendo, oppure leggendo, quello straordinario romanzo d’iniziazione e d’avventura che Dante chiamò, in tutta umiltà, semplicemente «Commedia». Maristella Mazzocca, laureata in Lettere classiche, dottore di ricerca in Filologia moderna, giornalista pubblicista, è stata docente nei Licei e poi collaboratrice di quotidiani e riviste. Ama gli autori di frontiera, in particolare Giacomo Leopardi, legato a doppio filo al mondo classico eppure anticipatore come nessuno dell’età della crisi. Ama non meno Dante, inattuale rispetto all’oggi nostro e suo e perciò contemporaneo dell’umanità. Ad entrambi ha dedicato saggi comparsi su autorevoli riviste accademiche (Lettere italiane, Sigma, Tradurre poesia). Ha ideato e promuove da oltre un quin- dicennio la rassegna di incontri I valori che non muoiono e, da un quinquennio, il concorso per la Scuola secondaria Adotta una parola. Vive a Padova ed è attualmente Presidente del Comitato di Padova della Società Dante Alighieri.

The articles in this volume of ARCHIMEDES examine particular cases of `reception' in ways that emphasize pressing historiographical and methodological issues. Such issues arise in any consideration of the transmission and appropriation of scientific concepts and practices that originated in the several `centers' of European learning, subsequently to appear (often in considerably altered guise) in regions at the European periphery. They discuss the transfer of new scientific ideas, the mechanisms of their introduction, and the processes of their appropriation at the periphery. The themes that frame the discussions of the complex relationship between the origination of ideas and their reception include the ways in which the ideas of the Scientific Revolution were introduced, the particularities of their expression in each place, the specific forms of resistance encountered by these new ideas, the extent to which such expression and resistance displays national characteristics, the procedures through which new ways of dealing with nature were made legitimate, and the commonalities and differences between the methods developed by scholars for handling scientific issues.
