Nonostante sia trascorso più di mezzo secolo dal crollo del fascismo e dalla fine del secondo conflitto mondiale, siamo davvero convinti di sapere come andarono effettivamente le cose? Il tanto discusso dopoguerra italiano può considerarsi concluso? Piero Buscaroli, critico musicale, scrittore e giornalista non ne è affatto convinto e ha deciso di aprire la sua valigia di carte, documenti inediti e ricordi troppo a lungo taciuti per raccontarci il suo Novecento. Adolescente romagnolo con la passione per il pianoforte, assiste con stupore a fianco del padre Corso, insigne latinista, al naufragio «non casuale» del 1943-45, che precipitò l'Italia in una spirale di guerra e violenze. L'interpretazione di eventi come la «congiura» del 25 luglio contro Mussolini, la dissoluzione militare e civile dell'8 settembre, l'occupazione tedesca e i «crimini dei vincitori» ci restituisce l'immagine di un Buscaroli «schierato a vita», cittadino coatto di una «ex nazione». Le sue "passeggiate fuori dalle solite strade della storiografia dominante» lo portano poi a visitare luoghi simbolo del Novecento come il Giappone e la Germania del dopoguerra, il Vietnam del 1966, la Praga del 1968, senza rinunciare agli incontri, che si susseguono in questi anni, con personaggi altrettanto significativi, da Ezra Pound a Dino Grandi, dall'ambasciatore giapponese Hidaka - l'ultima persona che ebbe un colloquio con Mussolini prima dell'arresto ordinato dal re - al dittatore portoghese Salazar. Come in una rapsodia a lungo studiata, gli argomenti e gli spunti polemici «disperatamente difformi» disegnano i confini via via più precisi di una tragedia insieme personale e collettiva, che ha segnato nel profondo la coscienza contemporanea. Per Buscaroli, il revisionismo delle verità osteggiate e sepolte dal pregiudizio ideologico si è fatto imperativo morale, mentre lo spirito di contraddizione da cui si sente mosso diventa strumento essenziale di libertà. In una felice mescolanza di cronaca giornalistica e documento storico, Dalla parte dei vinti riesce a unire alla scrupolosa e talvolta inedita ricostruzione di fatti decisivi dell'ultimo cinquantennio il ritmo appassionato e mai pretestuoso del feroce pamphlet politico. Che farà discutere.

Environment, Social Justice, and the Media in the Age of Anthropocene addresses three imminent challenges to human society in the age of the Anthropocene. The first challenge involves the survival of the species; the second the breakdown of social justice; and the third the inability of the media to provide global audiences with an adequate orientation about these issues. The notion of the Anthropocene as a geological age shaped by human intervention implies a new understanding of the human context that influences the physical and biological sciences. Human existence continues to be affected by the physical and biological reality from which it evolved but, in turn, it affects that reality as well. The key question for the history of universal human rights is why it took so long for them to become established as law. The main theme of this book is that the attainment of universal human rights required heroic struggle, first by individuals and then by ever-increasing numbers of people who supported those views against the major historical trends. Universal human rights are won from a hostile majority by outsiders. The chapters in the book describe the milestones in that struggle. The history presented in this book shows that, in most places at most times, even today, for concrete material reasons a great many people oppose the notion that all individuals have equal rights. The dominant history since the 1600s has been that of a mass struggle for the national-democratic state. This book argues that this struggle for national rights has been practically and logically contradictory with the struggle for universal rights. It would only be otherwise if there were free migration and access to citizenship on demand by anybody. This has never been the case. Rather than drawing only on European sources and being limited to major literary figures, this book is written from the Gramscian perspective that ideas mean little until they are taken up as mass ideologies. It draws on sources from Asia and America and on knowledge about mass attitudes, globally and throughout history.
