Il volume propone una ricognizione organica delle esperienze molteplici praticate dal poeta Vincenzo Monti (1754-1828) e da chi gli fu vicino nei suoi ultimi anni di vita, conferendo spessore a vicende di rilievo che si fondono in un orizzonte unitario, ma che risultano abitualmente sottaciute o sacrificate dalle indagini più recenti. Emerge in primo luogo la natura sottilmente sperimentale che qualifica l’estremo compito poetico affrontato dal Monti nel corso della sua carriera prolungata e feconda: esso consistette nel ‘volgarizzamento’ dal tedesco in sciolti italiani (1825-26), realizzato insieme con il giovane trentino Andrea Maffei, di parte del poema (Tunisias) del patriarca magiaro di Venezia, János László Pyrker. Intrecciandosi con l’epopea cristiana e con il sentimentalismo ‘nordico’ di quella prova letteraria, un secondo nucleo di interessi riguarda la simpatia crescente che il Monti seppe esprimere dinanzi alle rivoluzioni liberali in atto negli stessi anni Venti del secolo: sia nel caso del tentativo, fallito, di sedizione antiaustriaca previsto a Milano nella primavera del 1821, sia nei confronti della vittoriosa insurrezione popolare che diede invece inizio alla rivoluzione ellenica. Costituisce un terzo aspetto simultaneo dell’impegno letterario e intellettuale del Monti in quei frangenti storici l’applicazione rigorosa, insieme con il marchese Gian Giacomo Trivulzio e con Giovanni Antonio Maggi, allo studio, alla correzione e all’edizione criticamente accertata del Convivio di Dante (1826-27), in una prospettiva che, lontano dal contrarsi entro il perimetro di un mero esercizio erudito, implicò una rilettura politica e civile dell’opera dantesca e dei suoi lasciti vitali nel quadro dell’età storica presente, condizionata dall’espansione vigorosa del romanticismo liberale, negli stessi mesi in cui a Milano avrebbe infine visto la luce la Ventisettana dei Promessi sposi.

La figura e l’opera di Giosue Carducci sono attraversate da una profonda contraddizione, non sempre risolta. Da un lato, infatti, il professore-poeta si pone come ultimo scudiero dei classici, il campione della tradizione nazionale, colui al quale la storia ha attribuito il compito di creare i miti della nuova nazione. Dall’altro egli guarda all’Europa, alle sperimentazioni poetiche in atto, ed è in grado di dialogare con i dotti del vecchio continente. Se la Francia continua a essere l’interlocutrice principale, Carducci presta attenzione al mondo tedesco, da cui è stato ugualmente ripagato. Di questo fecondo dialogo il presente volume è una testimonianza ricca e preziosa, in grado di sfatare molti pregiudizi (come quello del Carducci irredentista germanofobo) e di aprire inedite prospettive di ricerca.

Il volume porta alla luce un inedito leopardiano, precisamente una fin qui del tutto sconosciuta recensione. È un testo compiuto, in bella copia e firmato, ma che Leopardi ha rinunciato a pubblicare. Sconosciuto è peraltro anche l’opuscolo recensito, L’Ombra di Dante, «visione» di Giuliano Anniballi, stampata a Loreto nel 1816. Lo studio colloca l’inedito nella carriera leopardiana, ne spiega genesi, peculiarità, implicazioni; illustra i rapporti con altre opere (la rinuncia alla recensione da parte di Giacomo non significa infatti che la lettura dell’Ombra di Dante in lui non agisca, non lasci altre tracce); ricostruisce una stagione di attività febbrile, in cui proprio il nome di Dante assume un posto privilegiato dentro la sua poetica del primitivo. Né lo studio dimentica di illuminare l’involontario co-protagonista, Giuliano Anniballi, di cui è disegnata l’intera parabola: dai primi passi nella nativa Urbino fino agli anni riminesi della maturità e della vecchiaia, ormai oltre la metà dell’Ottocento, ma inspirando ed espirando sempre fiera aria classicista. In appendice è fornita la riproduzione integrale del rarissimo opuscolo L’Ombra di Dante; la plaquette è ovviamente impreziosita anche dalla riproduzione dell’autografo dell’inedito leopardiano.

Del prezioso, affascinante epistolario di Giacomo Leopardi il volume illustra in modo organico e nuovo le vicende lungo l’Ottocento, muovendo dal retroterra della sua prima edizione (Firenze, Le Monnier, 1849), e spingendosi fino alla quinta «ampliata e più compiuta» (Firenze, Successori Le Monnier, 1892). Le carte e i libri appartenuti a Prospero Viani (1812-1892), per mezzo secolo raccoglitore generoso di lettere e notizie leopardiane in funzione delle sue curatele, sono stati eletti a osservatorio privilegiato e punto di partenza per una vasta ricognizione di materiali inediti o malnoti (manoscritti e a stampa). All’interesse storico, con ovvio riguardo anche alla fortuna di Leopardi (fitti e ramificati, ad esempio, i rapporti di Viani con uomini e donne che hanno intrattenuto contatti diretti con il poeta), se ne somma e intreccia un altro spiccatamente filologico, rivolto pure al domani dei futuri editori dell’epistolario. L’indagine storica, infatti, collabora in modo costante e deciso (si vorrebbe dire inevitabile) a fare luce sulle vicissitudini della trasmissione testuale, trasferendo così frequenti e non irrilevanti benefici nel corpo vivo delle lettere leopardiane, nella loro stessa lezione. Sul fronte filologico, esce così rafforzata e assai più consapevole la recensio; la gerarchia dei testimoni, sempre oggetto di attento esame (come, del resto, la loro natura e provenienza), non di rado è stata modificata, con ciò che consegue; alle copiose rettifiche puntuali (datazione, ripristino di porzioni testuali cadute e dimenticate, problema delle lettere a più destinatari, e altro ancora) si aggiunge pure qualche incremento netto. Nel disciplinare questa messe di materiali e informazioni, il volume mira in ogni istante a conciliare criteri di pertinenza, economia e chiarezza.

‘Classico’ e ‘romantico’ sembrano a prima vista termini chiaramente distinti e diametralmente opposti tanto dal punto di vista delle caratteristiche formali e di contenuto che dal punto di vista della periodizzazione storica. In realtà le periodizzazioni variano talvolta anche considerevolmente da paese a paese e in riferimento alle varie arti. Al di là di alcuni elementi formali e di contenuto effettivamente divergenti, le due ‘correnti’ artistiche hanno inoltre molte proprietà in comune, cosicché non è difficile rinvenire elementi romantici in opere comunemente considerate classicistiche ovvero elementi classici in opere attribuite al Romanticismo. Proprio questi momenti di trasversalità, di contaminazione e di sovrapposizione di ‘classico’ e ‘romantico’ nelle discussioni estetiche, nelle opere letterarie o nelle composizioni musicali, ma anche nella produzione pittorica o nelle creazioni architettoniche di diversi paesi europei costituiscono il tema su cui riflettono i contributi raccolti in questo volume.

This book studies the nature of Venetian rule over the Slavs of Dalmatia during the eighteenth century, focusing on the cultural elaboration of an ideology of empire that was based on a civilizing mission toward the Slavs. The book argues that the Enlightenment within the “Adriatic Empire” of Venice was deeply concerned with exploring the economic and social dimensions of backwardness in Dalmatia, in accordance with the evolving distinction between “Western Europe” and “Eastern Europe” across the continent. It further argues that the primitivism attributed to Dalmatians by the Venetian Enlightenment was fundamental to the European intellectual discovery of the Slavs. The book begins by discussing Venetian literary perspectives on Dalmatia, notably the drama of Carlo Goldoni and the memoirs of Carlo Gozzi. It then studies the work that brought the subject of Dalmatia to the attention of the European Enlightenment: the travel account of the Paduan philosopher Alberto Fortis, which was translated from Italian into English, French, and German. The next two chapters focus on the Dalmatian inland mountain people called the Morlacchi, famous as “savages” throughout Europe in the eighteenth century. The Morlacchi are considered first as a concern of Venetian administration and then in relation to the problem of the “noble savage,” anthropologically studied and poetically celebrated. The book then describes the meeting of these administrative and philosophical discourses concerning Dalmatia during the final decades of the Venetian Republic. It concludes by assessing the legacy of the Venetian Enlightenment for later perspectives on Dalmatia and the South Slavs from Napoleonic Illyria to twentieth-century Yugoslavia.
