Menjelang 2000, masyarakat Indonesia diguncang oleh krisis ekonomi dan transisi politik. Masa itu ditandai dengan maraknya konflik sosial yang berkembang menjadi peristiwa kekerasan. Di beberapa tempat, seperti Ambon, Poso, dan Sampit, ketidakpuasan, kekecewaan, dan keputusasaan diselesaikan dengan aksi perusakan, pembakaran, dan penganiayaan. Alih-alih sekadar menggunakan analisis makro dalam memetakan fenomena kekerasan tersebut, Damai di Bumi Sawerigading menyorot fakta bahwa fenomena kekerasan tidak terjadi di semua tempat. Mengapa tempat-tempat tertentu relatif aman dan damai, meski masyarakatnya juga mengalami dampak krisis ekonomi dan transisi politik? Artinya, diperlukan kajian yang bersifat fenomenologis untuk membongkar penyebab konflik dan kekerasan. Apalagi, sebagian besar kasus kekerasan komunal didahului oleh konflik sosial yang bersifat lokal dan regional. Dalam kerangka resolusi konflik dan upaya membangun damai, sumbangsih yang buku ini berikan adalah mekanisme penyelesaian konflik berbasis kultur lokal. Buku yang menguraikan konflik dan kekerasan sosial di Luwu, Sulawesi Selatan ini dapat menjadi referensi bagi pemerintah, LSM, aparat keamanan, dan masyarakat untuk melestarikan budaya damai, menghentikan konflik kekerasan, dan membangun harmoni dalam keberagaman.
