Dios es más allá de todo nuestro ser y trasciende todo nuestro hablar. Pero, a la vez, se encuentra siempre con nosotros y crea relaciones personales que nos hacen sentir y practicar su fuerza salvadora, a través de las más diversas imágenes en continuo crecimiento. Así, simultáneamente, descalifica y quiere arrancar de nosotros otros imaginarios sobre Él que nos pueblan, le desfiguran, blasfeman su buen nombre y cierran a sus hijos la puerta de entrada al hogar de su mesa y amistad. Jesús le trataba como Abba, y es a partir de esta invocación, y no al revés, como tenemos que leer las demás imágenes de Dios que nos ofrece el Antiguo Testamento. Rastrearemos los caminos de las vivencias por las que Jesús accedió a ese conocimiento y a esa práctica del Padre: A Jesús todo le recuerda a su Padre, todo se le hace peldaño para subir o bajar hacia Él, todo se le vuelve oportunidad para encontrarle, para hablar de Él, para tender un puente que le mantiene en continua comunicación con Él: los momentos "teofánicos" de su vida, su propia vida de cada día, las situaciones y las gentes con que se encuentra, las tradiciones de su pueblo (que sondearemos en muchos de los preciosos textos que nos ha legado y que alimentaron las vivencias de Jesús), sus tiempos de oración personal, en que todo lo rumia y lo expresa en diálogo libre y confiado (que "nos atrevemos a reproducir" con infinita reverencia) con su Abba. Sintonías para que nos nazca dentro la música y, con ella, la fe confiada, la esperanza resistente y siempre rehecha, el amor que todo lo transforma.

Juan Ramon Jimenez (1881-1958) was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1956, yet his work remains far less well-known in the English-speaking world than it deserves. Jimenez was a prolific writer - his collected verse fills twenty volumes - and his early poems were first published whilst still in his teens. During the early twentieth century Jimenez wrote and published voraciously and was very active within Spanish-speaking literary circles. In 1939, he left Spain for America, eventually settling in Puerto Rica until his death in 1958. It is difficult to hang a label on Jimenez' work, for his influences were many and his output vast. These selected poems, published here in English and the original Spanish, give the reader a chance to explore this remarkable talent.

As part of the larger, ongoing movement throughout Latin America to reclaim non-Hispanic cultural heritages and identities, indigenous writers in Mexico are reappropriating the written word in their ancestral tongues and in Spanish. As a result, the long-marginalized, innermost feelings, needs, and worldviews of Mexico's ten to twenty million indigenous peoples are now being widely revealed to the Western societies with which these peoples coexist. To contribute to this process and serve as a bridge of intercultural communication and understanding, this groundbreaking, three-volume anthology gathers works by the leading generation of writers in thirteen Mexican indigenous languages: Nahuatl, Maya, Tzotzil, Tzeltal, Tojolabal, Tabasco Chontal, Purepecha, Sierra Zapoteco, Isthmus Zapoteco, Mazateco, Ñahñu, Totonaco, and Huichol. Volume 1 contains narratives and essays by Mexican indigenous writers. Their texts appear first in their native language, followed by English and Spanish translations. Frischmann and Montemayor have abundantly annotated the English, Spanish, and indigenous-language texts and added glossaries and essays that trace the development of indigenous texts, literacy, and writing. The first Latin American to receive a Nobel Prize for Literature, the Chilean writer Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957) is often characterized as a healing, maternal voice who spoke on behalf of women, indigenous peoples, the disenfranchised, children, and the rural poor. She is that political poet and more: a poet of philosophical meditation, self-consciousness, and daring. This is a book full of surprises and paradoxes. The complexity and structural boldness of these prose-poems, especially the female-erotic prose pieces of her first book, make them an important moment in the history of literary modernism in a tradition that runs from Baudelaire, the North American moderns, and the South American postmodernistas. This Spanish-English bilingual volume gathers the most famous and representative prose writings of Gabriela Mistral, which have not been as readily available to English-only readers as her poetry. The pieces are grouped into four sections. "Fables, Elegies, and Things of the Earth" includes fifteen of Mistral's most accessible prose-poems. "Prose and Prose-Poems from Desolación / Desolation [1922]" presents all the prose from Mistral's first important book.
