Language And Power written by Benedict R. O'G. Anderson and has been published by Equinox Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In this lively book, Benedict R. O'G. Anderson explores the cultural and political contradictions that have arisen from two critical facts in Indonesian history: that while the Indonesian nation is young, the Indonesian nation is ancient originating in the early seventeenth-century Dutch conquests; and that contemporary politics are conducted in a new language. Bahasa Indonesia, by peoples (especially the Javanese) whose cultures are rooted in medieval times. Analyzing a spectrum of examples from classical poetry to public monuments and cartoons, Anderson deepens our understanding of the interaction between modern and traditional notions of power, the mediation of power by language, and the development of national consciousness. Language and Power, now republished as part of Equinox Publishing's Classic Indonesia series, brings together eight of Anderson's most influential essays over the past two decades and is essential reading for anyone studying the Indonesian country, people or language. Benedict Anderson is one of the world's leading authorities on Southeast Asian nationalism and particularly on Indonesia. He is Professor of International Studies and Director of the Modern Indonesia Project at Cornell University, New York. His other works include Imagined Communities: Reflections on the Origin and Spread of Nationalism and The Spectre of Comparisons: Nationalism, Southeast Asia, and the World.

Deena Burton is well known for her accomplishments as a dancer, choreographer, producer, and scholar of Indonesian Arts. In the course of her research she came across the pioneering work of Claire Holt, who had written about art and culture in New York and Europe, especially the rise of Modern Dance, between the fi rst and second World Wars. During a trip to Indonesia in 1930 Claire Holt became enamored of Javanese dance. She stayed for many years, on and off, and was among the community of artists and anthropologists living in Bali at that time including Walter Spies, Colin McPhee, Miguel Covarrubias, Margaret Mead and others who were both deeply infl uenced by this ancient culture and obsessive in documenting Indonesias emergence into the 20th century. This book, which began as Deenas PhD dissertation, is a tribute to her own dedication and that of a kindred spirit - Claire Holt and their love for the arts and peoples of Indonesia. Among the Toraja of highland Sulawesi, Indonesia, mortuary rituals are great performances. Bellowing water buffalo and squealing pigs for sacrifice, colorful displays of ritual architecture, and formal processions of gift-bearing guests set the scene for complex dramas about status, human value, and ties to ancestors, followers, and kin. To Indonesians throughout the archipelago, Toraja rituals have come to represent the cultural identity of this well-known group. Feasts of Honor is an exploration of these rituals, their changing meanings, and the lively dialogues they have sparked within Toraja culture, from the Dutch Colonial period to the recent era of nationalism, tourism, and migration.
