The choreographies of Bill T. Jones, Cleveland Ballet Dancing Wheels, Zab Maboungou, David Dorfman, Marie Chouinard, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, and others, have helped establish dance as a crucial discourse of the 90s. These dancers, Ann Cooper Albright argues, are asking the audience to see the body as a source of cultural identity — a physical presence that moves with and through its gendered, racial, and social meanings. Through her articulate and nuanced analysis of contemporary choreography, Albright shows how the dancing body shifts conventions of representation and provides a critical example of the dialectical relationship between cultures and the bodies that inhabit them. As a dancer, feminist, and philosopher, Albright turns to the material experience of bodies, not just the body as a figure or metaphor, to understand how cultural representation becomes embedded in the body. In arguing for the intelligence of bodies, Choreographing Difference is itself a testimonial, giving voice to some important political, moral, and artistic questions of our time. Excerpt from Modern Dancing and Dancers IT is not unlikely that when the art historian of the future comes to treat of the artistic activity of the first decade of the twentieth century, he will remark as one of its most notable accomplishments a renaissance of the art of the Dance. That this renaissance is an accomplished fact, is a matter of common knowledge. Within a relatively short period there have appeared several great dancers, who must necessarily have been preparing themselves for a considerable time previously to their appearance, yet as it were in secret, without cognisance of one another, with a common aim, but without a common plan. Con temporaries in time, they have been as far removed in space as the East is from the West. In all movements which touch the spirit, this circumstance of the simultaneous but independent manifesta tion of a common impulse is at once the most general and the most unaccountable. The still small voice whispers into space and those of a delicate hearing hear and respond. We content ourselves by repeating the explanation, which is no explanation, that the movement is in the air. "There is no measure or science, no absolute approach, to the process by which an instrument of accuracy transforms itself into a dancer and learns to transform steps into dance. That process differs subjectively from artist to artist. If you want to know anything about it, or anything about the choices any given dancer has made and why, you must go straight to that dancer and ask. No one else can tell you, because no one else knows." -- Introduction.

What do artists who choose dance as their subject tell us -- or not tell us -- about dancers and dancing? Spanning the globe from eastern and western Europe to Turkey, Korea, Polynesia, and the United States, Imaging Dance brings together the work of thirteen dance and art scholars who interpret images of dance and dancing. The images date from the sixth century AD to the present, and include paintings, drawings, lithographs, etchings, wood-block prints, stone carvings, and photographs. Each chapter enhances appreciation of artistic renderings and contributes to understanding how people see and envision what they see. Through these engaging and richly illustrated accounts, scholars, students, and general readers will find information about contexts and settings in which dance occurs, socio-cultural attitudes towards dance and dancing, artistic techniques and conventions, religious and political philosophies, rituals, repertoire, and details of movement. Readers interested in the performing and visual arts through a variety of perspectives -- from art, dance, history, dance ethnology, and anthropology -- will find Imaging Dance a welcome addition to their libraries.

A History Of Dancing written by Reginald St.-Johnston and has been published by Dance Books Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Games & Activities categories.

"Reginald St.-Johnston's A History of Dancing (1906) was the first book published in English on its subject in the twentieth century. The author was then only twenty-five and at the beginning of his distinguished career as a British barrister and colonial servant. St.-Johnston shared the assumption, widely held by other dance writers of his time, that dance was of equal importance in religion, courtship, entertainment, and art, and had read widely in the available literature. His bibliography ranges from Arbeau's Orchésographie to Headlam's Theory of Theatrical Dancing, and although he rarely cites his sources, among the writers he does mention are Menestrier, Weaver, and Blasis. St.-Johnston's practise of unquestioned borrowings from previous texts would now be considered dubious; but in its time his book, with its coverage of dance ranging from ancient Egypt and Greece to the popular dancers of Victorian theatre, was considered of sufficient importance to become a major (though unacknowledged) source for Havelock Ellis's famous essay 'The art of dancing'. This new reprint makes a fascinating text widely available for the first time in many years"--Publisher's website.
