One gambler is a manic former cokehead with an Ivy League degree. The second is a college dropout trying to make a living at the only thing he enjoyed at school -- gambling. The third, one of Vegas's most respected bookmakers, is perilously close to burning out. The Odds follows the lives of these three professional gamblers through a college basketball season in a one-of-a-kind city struggling to reconcile its lawless past with its family-friendly makeover. With a wiseguy attitude and a faultless eye and ear for the sights and sounds of Vegas and its denizens, Chad Millman has created a portrait that the Wall Street Journal called "fascinating. . . often screamingly funny." The Las Vegas Review-Journal had just one word for the book: "Superb."

In the second title in the slam-dunk new series from bestselling author Amy Ignatow, the Odds are back and trying to figure out just who inflicted these lame abilities on them in the first place. Nick can still teleport four inches to the left, and Farshad’s thumbs are still super strong. Cookie can still read minds, if they’re thinking of directions, and Martina can still change the color of her eyes. But now, Martina can see the invisible, and when Nick is super stressed, he can move a lot farther than four inches. As their powers evolve in possibly dangerous ways, the Odds are even more determined to solve the mystery of their origin, but it means interacting at school—a serious social risk to popular girl Cookie. Soon, it becomes clear that Auxano, the chemical company that employs half the town, is involved. With the help of some renegade Amish teenagers and Ed, the invisible bus driver, this unlikely group of companions will uncover a nefarious experiment in which they’ve become unwitting test subjects. They’ll also begin to become something even more incredible—friends.

At Odds written by Suzanne Morton and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-01-01 with History categories.

Using a rich variety of historical sources, Suzanne Morton traces the history of gambling regulation in five Canadian provinces - Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, and B.C. - from the First World War to the federal legalization in 1969. This regulatory legislation, designed to control gambling, ended a long period of paradox and pretence during which gambling was common, but still illegal. Morton skilfully shows the relationship between gambling and the wider social mores of the time, as evinced by labour, governance, and the regulation of 'vice.' Her focus on the ways in which race, class, and gender structured the meaning of gambling underpins and illuminates the historical data she presents. She shows, for example, as "Old Canada" (the Protestant, Anglo-Celtic establishment) declined in influence, gambling took on a less deviant connotation - a process that continued as charity became secularized and gambling became a lucrative fundraising activity eventually linked to the welfare state. At Odds is the first Canadian historical examination of gambling, a complex topic which is still met by moral ambivalence, legal proscription, and volatile opinion. This highly original study will be of interest to the undergraduate history or social science student, but will also hold the attention of a more general reader.

You see, Swamp Root Manor isn’t just any old house. It’s alive, it’s haunted, and everyone in it is...a little bit Odd. Everyone except Begonia. And while she’s waiting for her Oddity to arrive, the manor is running out of money, thanks in no small part to all of Bug’s hospital bills. But Begonia refuses to let Swamp Root close. If she could just tap into her Oddity, she could use its power to save the manor and all fifty-two of her grandparents. But she is only days away from her 11th birthday and if she doesn’t get it by then, it will never come. She will be removed from her home and sent to the normal world. Her memory will be wiped. And her family will be gone. So, Bug has to do the unthinkable... join forces with the most annoying boy in the world to track down their Oddities. Together they battle humans, ghosts, their own self-doubt, and sometimes even each other in order to save the only family she’s ever known.

Are you looking for actionable things that you can do to help your cancer treatment, or possibly prevent cancer in the first place? Something with scientific evidence that it works? Something that you won’t be embarrassed to discuss with your family doctor or oncologist? Something that can improve your immune system and general health? That is exactly what you will find in this book. Read on for… • Actionable methods for naturally treating and preventing cancer (the scientific way, not the internet blogger way) • Simple things that you can add to your medical treatment to Improve Your Odds of successfully fighting cancer • 100% backed by science that you, or your doctor, can easily verify • Easy to read and understand, but formatted so that you can share the science with your doctor • Improve your immune system and general health • Evidence that some of the recommendations may significantly improve immunotherapy outcomes, as well as benefit chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments. • New research information that has the potential to save many lives My hope is you’ll use this information to improve your medical treatment, not replace it. Even though some of the natural treatments have been scientifically shown to be very effective on their own, they are even more effective when used in conjunction with modern medicine. This is called “adjuvant” therapy. You should strive to “Improve Your Odds” of beating cancer, not thumb your nose at modern medicine. You do not need a scientific or medical background to understand this narrative—but its claims are evidenced with scientific abstracts that your doctor will appreciate (abstracts that you can skip if you wish to cut your reading time in half!). You will find that all recommendations have solid evidence behind them; this isn’t just another book where someone is simply making it all up and telling you what you want to hear. You should read this book with a highlighter and pencil at your side. This book has been extensively researched, and some of the information found here you will probably find in no other book or medical website. There is a special emphasis on how you can improve your immune system to better fight almost any cancer, even before you know you have it. You aren’t trying to fire your doctor; you just want to help “Improve Your Odds.” This book will help you do that. Your oncologist will want to know all of the supplements you are taking and why. This book includes the scientific abstracts and the information they need to find the full research studies. This will explain the “why” so you don’t have to. They may also want to geek out on all of this science as they rarely get exposed to research on natural cancer treatments. Finally, this book enables you to take some control over your cancer treatment or genetic predisposition. In fact, most of the recommendations in this book are great even if you are healthy, as they can help prevent cancer and improve your immune system, too. Whether you may have breast cancer, skin cancer, lung cancer, etc., improving the immune system and your body’s ability to fight cancer is always beneficial.
