In the Princess we have an allusion to the oft-quoted inscription over the Gate of Hell: How saw you not the inscription on the gate, Let no man enter in on pain of death; the lines in the Two Voices, My frozen heart began to beat, Remembering its ancient heat, seem to be a reminiscence of Lo gel che m' era intorno al cor ristretto, Spirito ed acqua fessi, (Purg., XXX, 97-8, ) and Conosco i segni dell' antica fiamma (ibid., 48). There is a very evident resemblance between Dante's discussion of Fortune1 and the Song of Fortune in Geraint and Enid: 1 Inf., VII, 73 ff., and line 95 of Canto XV: Pert giri fortuna la sua ruota. Turn, Fortune, turn thy wheel and lower the proud; Turn thy wild wheel thro' sunshine, storm, and cloud; Thy wheel and thee we neither love nor hate. Turn, Fortune, turn thy wheel with smile or frown; With that wild wheel we go not up or down; Our hoard is little, but our hearts are great. Smile and we smile, the lords of many lands; Frown and we smile, the lords of our own hands; For man is man and master of his fate.1 Turn, turn thy wheel above the staring crowd; Thy wheel and thou are shadows in the cloud; Thy wheel and thee we neither love nor hate. Excerpt from Dante the Man and the Poet The sea-wind blows through the pine forests of Ravenna, through the pine forests and over the deserted marshes where the ships of the Roman Navy once rode at anchor, and it was there - in that land which six hundred years ago was already the shrine of a half-forgotten past - that Dante looked forward to the future with firm and unfaltering faith and declared that in Florence alone would he accept the wreath due to the poet's temples. That faith was not crowned with fulfilment while he lived, for the ban of exile lay over him to the end, and it was only when it was too late that Florence repented of her cruelty; but the wheel has come full circle at last, nowhere is he more honoured to-day than in his own beloved city, and nowhere is his triumph more fully recognised, even though his ashes still rest among those who gave him shelter. It was in the month of May, 1265, that the child was born whose fame was steadily to increase with the passing of the ages until in this six hundredth century he is an object of world-wide reverence. Like all infant Florentines, he was carried to the Baptistery on the day of his birth, and there received the name of Durante, "the enduring one," a name prophetic of his lasting fame. It was, however, by its contraction - Dante - that the boy was known, and it is that name which has come down to us through the centuries. I am in hopes, however, that it may also be found serviceable by students of the original work, and for their guidance the numbers of the lines of Dante's poem have been introduced in the page-headings. Excerpt from Dante: A Dramatic Poem Some years ago a copy of this play came to me for criticism. I began to read it with a certain misgiving - so very many plays in many languages had been written around the same subject and so very few of them had been successful from both a dramatic and a literary point of view. The difficulty is perfectly obvious: most of the writers had been lovers of Dante first and dramatists after, and in an attempt to give truthful expression to the life of the man the absolute requirements of the theatre had been quite ignored. There is no greater human tragedy than that connoted by the life of the Florentine and yet the known elements in it, while lending themselves readily to literary, moulding, have usually defied the art of the dramatist who would also be a trustworthy biographer. I found Mrs. Rose's play to be good literature, good history, and at the same time it seemed to possess those elements requisite for a good acting play.
