Il volume ricostruisce una vicenda lunga più di un millennio, se si considera l’origine remota, orientale, della medicina occidentale. Questo sapere approdò anche nello Studio della Padova medievale, dove si radicò e crebbe rigoglioso. La Scuola di medicina padovana è stata in passato ed è tuttora una fucina di eccellenza. In occasione degli ottocento anni dell’Ateneo, che ricorrono nel 2022, questo volume celebra l’arte medica padovana dalle sue lontane origini ai giorni nostri. In queste dense pagine, frutto di una straordinaria opera di sintesi, è possibile ripercorrere l’intero arco degli sviluppi e dei progressi del sapere medico. Circostanze prevalentemente politiche ne hanno favorito lo sviluppo, che poté fiorire grazie alla presenza di professori e studenti decisi, gli uni, a insegnare, gli altri, ad apprendere. Uno straordinario gruppo di docenti che a Padova ha fatto la storia della medicina, destinata a diffondersi verso Oriente e Occidente. Come i traguardi raggiunti dall’anatomia padovana non ebbero confini, così anche le altre discipline, la fisiologia, la patologia, la clinica non soffrirono barriere di alcun genere. Il sapere medico e scientifico, che costituì e ancora rappresenta il patrimonio immateriale della Scuola medica padovana, si formò attraverso processi di contaminazione, di incontri e scontri con saperi di altre tradizioni e di altre università. La storia della medicina padovana richiama quella della tolleranza e libertà di pensiero, ingredienti preziosi del progresso sociale. Se, dopo la scomparsa della Repubblica di Venezia nel 1797, la Scuola dovette soggiacere a dominazioni straniere, prima di diventare italiana, tuttavia rimase sempre in contatto con l’effervescente comunità scientifica dell’Otto e Novecento. Nell’Ospedale San Francesco e nelle aule universitarie arrivarono presto le acquisizioni che tra Berlino, Parigi, Londra e le più recenti scuole mediche non europee si stavano velocemente sviluppando. Il lettore troverà in queste pagine la storia di un universo composito, fatto di cose e persone accomunate da ingegno e premura per il malato. L’arte medica, quando non riesce a prevenire la malattia, cerca di curarla o di alleviarla.

This book centers on a fascinating woman, Clare of Rimini (c. 1260 to c. 1324–29), whose story is preserved in a fascinating text. Composed by an anonymous Franciscan, the Life of the Blessed Clare of Rimini is the earliest known saint’s life originally written in Italian, and one of the few such lives to be written while its subject was still living.
