Giorni ricchi di possibilit� e di libert�, per noi che viviamo nell'Occidente felice, ma impoverita di verit�. Dante pu� insegnarci a distinguere ci� che conta da ci� che conta meno e da ci� che non conta per niente. Dante non crede che occorra rinunciare alla vita. � anzi pienamente convinto che il compito dell'uomo sia sviluppare al massimo grado le potenzialit� che Dio gli ha donate. � "in hac vita" che l'uomo si realizza e, cos� facendo, realizza il piano di Dio per lui. Per ogni uomo. Dante pensava alla grande, in generale. E questo pensiero generale gli faceva amare a capire ogni dettaglio del mondo e dell'esistenza. Per me, umile lettore del XXI secolo, la Divina commedia � sacra anche per altri motivi, pi� umani. Per quello che ha significato per i lettori nei secoli. Soprattutto per alcuni lettori in particolare. Tra tutti mi tocca profondamente la vicenda dell'arresto di Mandelstam, il poeta russo. Aveva scritto una poesia nella quale Stalin era descritto come un "ratto georgiano dalle dita grasse". Qualche tempo dopo, una sera, era nella sua povera casa con la moglie, alla quale dobbiamo questi ricordi, e l'amica Achmatova, poetessa. Non avevano nulla da mangiare. Mandelstam era appena andato dai vicini ai quali aveva chiesto qualcosa, per l'ospite. Era tornato con un uovo. Quando bussarono con forza alla porta. Era la polizia segreta. La stanza si riemp� di uomini, che frugarono tra le poche cose in cerca di altri scritti. Poi il capo ordin�: "Prenda la giacca e venga con noi". Le donne scoppiarono in lacrime. In che paese e in che tempo vivevano, dove un uomo poteva essere portato via per aver scritto una poesia! "Mangia almeno l'uovo", disse la moglie. Mandelstam si sedette e mangi� l'uovo, sotto lo sguardo dei poliziotti. Poi si mise la giacca e, prima di uscire per andare nessuno sapeva dove, furtivamente s'infil� in tasca un libro: La divina commedia.

Dante, Artist of Gesture proposes a visual technique for reading Dante's Comedy, suggesting that the reader engages with Dante's striking images of souls as if these images were arranged in an architectural space. Art historians have shown how series of discrete images or scenes in medieval places of worship, such as the mosaics in the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence or the frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, establish not only narrative sequences but also parallelisms between registers, forging links between those registers by the use of colour and gestural forms. Heather Webb takes up those techniques to show that the Comedy likewise invites the reader to make visual links between disparate, non-sequential moments in the text. In other words, Webb argues that Dante's poem asks readers to view its verbally articulated sequences of images with a set of observational tools that could be acquired from the practice of engaging with and meditating on the bodily depictions of vice and virtue in fresco cycles or programmes of mosaics in places of worship. One of the most inherently visible aspects of the Comedy is the representation of signature gestures of the characters described in each of the realms. This book traces described gestures and bodily signs across the canticles of the poem to provide a key for identifying affective and devotional itineraries within the text.
