Los ensayos agrupados en este libro se proponen contribuir a una revisión de la historia de la danza moderna estadounidense en su relación con el modernismo estético. En este sentido, conforman una introducción a la historia de la danza en ese país, representada por figuras canónicas como Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham o Yvonne Rainer, pero también una reflexión crítica sobre la historiografía de la danza y la relación entre arte y política. En el análisis propuesto por Mark Franko, el modernismo estético deja de ser una metanarrativa histórica para transformarse en un dispositivo, es decir, un ordenamiento del movimiento de los cuerpos plausible de ser "manipulado" desde la práctica. De este modo, las evoluciones estéticas devienen el fruto de luchas cinéticas. La investigación devela la genealogía del encapsulamiento formal de la emoción desde los años 1930 hasta la actualidad. En este sentido, responde a una pregunta crucial: ¿cómo llega a volverse imperceptible la influencia de la teoría estética de la izquierda revolucionaria de principios del siglo XX en la danza moderna? ¿De qué modo una danza engendrada a partir de una política de la emoción arriba a una estética de la indiferencia? La respuesta ofrecida se relaciona con una tensión característica de la danza histórica estadounidense, aquella que reside en el vínculo entre la política de clase y la política de género. Finalmente, Mark Franko persigue el objetivo de recuperar la emoción como práctica crítica, una postura que va a contracorriente del discurso hegemónico sobre lo contemporáneo en la danza.

Des dels anys setanta del segle XX, la creació i el pensament —especialment el vinculat als estudis feministes— han provat de copsar la corporalitat i la sexualitat en els textos literaris. Invertint l’objecte d’anàlisi i dialogant amb les obres de Jacques Derrida i Hélène Cixous, aquest assaig indaga de quina manera, en la dansa, els cossos queden travessats per una escriptura —la coreografia— que flexiona la seva diferència sexual. The critique of modernist ideology from France's leading radical theorist In this book Jacques Rancière radicalises his critique of modernism and its postmodern appendix. He contrasts their unilinear and exclusive time with the interweaving of temporalities at play in modern processes of emancipation and artistic revolutions, showing how this plurality itself refers to the double dimension of time. Time is more than a line drawn from the past to the future. It is a form of life, marked by the ancient hierarchy between those who have time and those who do not. This hierarchy, continued in the Marxist notion of the vanguard and nakedly exhibited in Clement Greenberg’s modernism, still governs a present which clings to the fable of historical necessity and its experts. In opposition to this, Rancière shows how the break with the hierarchical conception of time, formulated by Emerson in his vision of the new poet, implies a completely different idea of the modern. He sees the fulfilment of this in the two arts of movement, cinema and dance, which at the beginning of the twentieth century abolished the opposition between free and mechanical people, at the price of exposing the rift between the revolution of artists and that of strategists.
