Die sieben erhaltenen Dramen des Tragikers Sophokles entstanden in der zweiten Halfte des 5. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. Athen war damals von der Dynamik eines umfassenden geistigen Wandels gepragt. Die radikale Demokratie durchdrang alle Lebensbereiche und wurde vielfach als Bedrohung uberkommener Werte, insbesondere im Bereich der Familie empfunden. In der Arbeit wird versucht zu zeigen, wie Sophokles die grossen Gestalten seiner Tragodien (Aias, Herakles, Antigone, Elektra, Odipus und Philoktet) zu Vertretern einer alteren Weltsicht macht, die nicht mehr die zeitgemasse ist, und wie er ihnen gleichwohl mit distanzierter Sympathie gegenubersteht. Ein leitender Gedanke der Arbeit ist es, dass diese Charaktere in ihrer stolzen und trotzigen, 'unmodernen' Haltung fur Sophokles gemass dem bekannten Diktum des Aristoteles Menschen sind, "wie sie sein sollen".

The reception history of the French Revolution in France and England is well documented among Anglophone scholars; however, the debate over the Revolution in Germany is much less well known. Fichte's Contribution played an important role in this debate. This eclectic blend results in an unusual rights theory that at times veers close to a form of anarchism. Written in 1792–93, just before Fichte moved to Jena to develop his philosophical system in a series of works—above all the Wissenschaftslehre of 1794—the Contribution provides invaluable insight into Fichte's early development. In the modern era, warfare came to play a crucial role in the formation of states, whereas the new wars emerging at the beginning of the 21st century have mostly gone together with the failure or collapse of states. The author draws out the key shifts involved in this process: from symmetrical conflicts between states to asymmetrical global relationships of force; from national armies to increasingly private or commercial bands of warlords, child soldiers and mercenaries; from pitched battles to protracted conflicts in which there is often little fighting and most of the violence is directed against civilians. Changes in weapons technology have combined with complex economic factors to make the prospect of endlessly simmering wars a real danger in the years to come. Against this background, the author outlines the rise of a novel form of international terrorism, conceived more as a political method of communication than as an element in a military strategy.
