Cumhuriyetin yüzüncü yılı dolayısıyla kaleme alınan bu kitap esasen bir “siyasi tarih” anlatımıdır ve geride kalan yüz yıla soldan, bir sosyalistin gözüyle bakma çabasıdır. Böyle söyleyince “tarafsız” veya “objektif” olunamayacağını ileri sürenler olabilir ama aslında her tarih anlatımı sübjektif ve taraflıdır. Buna yol açan ise bakış açısıdır; nereden baktığınıza bağlı olarak gördükleriniz ve yorumlarınız farklı olacaktır. Bu kitaptaki bakış açısı “resmi tarih” denilen anlayıştan uzak, ona eleştirel bir yaklaşım içermektedir. Dolayısıyla bazı önyargılara çarpabilir ama önemli olan basit veya temelsiz bir övgü veya sövgüden uzak durarak olguları anlamaya, olan biteni anlamlandırmaya çalışmaktır. İlk bölümde “Kurucu Babalar” ele alınıyor. İkinci bölümde cumhuriyetin farklı siyasi dönemleri ve aktörleri değerlendiriliyor. Üçüncü bölümde cumhuriyetin başından bugüne etkili olmuş üç siyasi-ideolojik hareket ele alınıyor: Milliyetçilik, İslamcılık, Sosyalizm. Dördüncü bölümde askeri darbeler ele alınırken beşinci bölümde sosyalist hareketin 1960-80 arasındaki özel dönemi tartışılıyor. Altıncı bölümde Kürt meselesinin, yedinci bölümde ise AKP’nin iktidarda bulunduğu son 21 yılın tartışması yapılıyor. Son bölümde ise dönüm noktası niteliğindeki bazı siyasi cinayetler değerlendiriliyor. ABD’li siyahi yazar ve aktivist James Baldwin, “Tarih geçmiş değildir, tarihi yanımızda taşırız” demiş. Aslında tarihe yüklenen bu rol geçmişe, tarihimize nasıl baktığımıza, nasıl yüzleştiğimize bağlıdır. Geçmişi yanımızda taşımamamız için onunla yüzleşmemiz gerek zira gerektiğinde yeni başlangıçlar yapmak ve geleceği kurmak zor olur.
