Collana Opus diretta da Roberto Cassetti e Marcello Fagiolo Le relazioni che accompagnano il mutevole rapporto tra il verde e la città e gli indirizzi progettuali che ne sono discesi negli ultimi tre secoli costituiscono il nostro campo di indagine. Il libro, a differenza della letteratura corrente sui giardini e sui parchi, indaga sul verde soprattutto come “materiale” della scena urbana, destinato a sviluppare rapporti sempre più complessi con la città, con l'assetto delle sue singole parti e con la sua organizzazione complessiva. È proprio in questo che si distacca dall'indagine corrente che considera il verde un universo chiuso in sé, ove si riflette il concetto dominante di natura e le forme di rappresentazione e di progettazione che di essa si danno in un determinato periodo. Il libro perciò abbandona l'assunto che il giardino, o il parco urbano siano indagabili autonomamente, e lo sostituisce con la presa d'atto che sono strutturalmente una componente della città – una componente essenziale – e come tutte le componenti urbane non sono analizzabili al di fuori dei bisogni e degli assetti che l'organizzazione della città gli assegna. L'obiettivo è dunque ripercorrere il rapporto tra il verde e la città, per comprendere il ruolo sempre più centrale che le strutture insediative attuali conferiscono agli spazi verdi e per cogliere il valore strategico che l'uso, alla grande come alla piccola scala, del materiale verde acquista nella rifondazione della disciplina urbanistica all'inizio del terzo millennio. Difatti oggi sul verde si riprendono le fila di un discorso storico che era stato distorto e ribaltato dal Movimento moderno, il quale aveva annullato, pur nella compresenza generalizzata degli spazi verdi (la città nel parco) la loro valenza di luogo urbano, decontestualizzandoli e togliendogli cosí la capacità di orchestrare il tracciato (ormai assente) dello spazio pubblico della città e della metropoli. La dissoluzione delle antiche piazze e delle vie come luoghi collettivi aveva visto al contempo l'annullamento degli stessi luoghi verdi come spazi di vita – il giardino, il parco, il viale alberato, l'avenue promenade – in uno spazio verde indefinito, un piano libero naturalistico che aveva sollecitato, sull'esempio svedese, le illusioni di tanti urbanisti. L'approccio ecologico ai problemi della città; l'attenzione sempre più viva al problema dello spazio collettivo, soprattutto alle sue nuove forme integrate – di verde e di strade e di piazze – più rispondenti ai nuovi indirizzi di vita della società; la ricerca di luoghi in grado di promuovere una differente quanto condivisa riconoscibilità per gruppi sociali sempre più destrutturati e frammentati; la ricerca della ricompattazione della città, compatibile con le attuali forme insediative diffuse sul territorio, sono alcuni dei tanti problemi che concorrono ad assegnare oggi al verde nuove potenzialità, che spaziano da quelle legate alla costruzione di nuovi “luoghi” collettivi, a quelle connesse con la ricostruzione degli equilibri ambientali della città e della metropoli (“reti ecologiche” e “trame verdi”), a quelle, infine, che ne assecondano il carattere di “connettivo” del sistema degli spazi urbani in grado di promuovere la costruzione di un nuovo tracciato degli spazi aperti della città attuale, dove confluiscano e siano messi a sistema insieme alla trama “verde” anche la trama “grigia” (gli spazi pavimentati) e la trama “blu” (il sistema delle acque). Si assiste oggi in generale ad una ripresa del verde in quanto materiale di un nuovo approccio paesaggistico, che tende a promuovere nello spazio “aperto” delle periferie diffuse delle città attuali nuove vie di “urbanità” e insieme un rinnovato paesaggio in città (Stadtlandschaft), come visione progettuale che riapre in urbanistica il ritorno dei grandi fattori “naturalistici” e offre risposte al progetto della complessità metropolitana attraverso l'organizzazione su vasta scala del sistema degli spazi verdi, recuperando nei suoi concetti chiave la lezione di un passato interrotto dal funzionalismo (quello dell'urbanistica Beaux-Arts). Si tratta di quattro aspetti chiave: il conformarsi alla topografia dei luoghi; l'utilizzazione delle aree in maniera che siano naturalisticamente adattate; la conservazione e lo sviluppo di tutte le risorse naturali e infine la promozione della bellezza come strutturazione dell'impianto urbano piuttosto che come semplice operazione di arredo. This open access book presents current knowledge about ecosystem services (ES) in urban planning, and discusses various urban ES topics such as spatial distribution of urban ecosystems, population distribution, and physical infrastructure properties. In recent years it has become common-place to hear claims that public space in cities across the globe has become the exclusive preserve of the wealthy and privileged, at the expense of the needs of wider society.
