"Daredevils of the Atlantic" chronicles the exploits of a relatively new breed of adventurers and fortune-seekers who sometimes succeed and sometimes fail at crossing the Atlantic Ocean in all sorts of unlikely vessels and contraptions, including a few who even tried to swim across. Some were powered by motors, some by sails, currents, or just raw human power and athletic stamina. Many were outlandish attempts that only a madman could have conceived. These are their stories. The ocean separates two great continents, and men (and it has usually been the male species) have always sought new ways to cross 'the pond'-and not all of them in boats. This book is about these people: some wise and thoughtful, others reckless and frankly crazy; some well-prepared, others impetuous and disorganized; some skilled and proficient who understood the risks, while others were hot-headed, inexperienced and impulsive; some voyages were carefully planned, while others seemed to be cooked up on little more than a whim. In the world of trans-Atlantic sailing, as in life, it takes all sorts... What all these adventurers have in common, however, is that they launched themselves on a voyage of personal challenge and discovery, during which they put their lives on the line. For that reason alone, we should take our (sailing) hats off to them"--

What Would The Founders Do written by Richard Brookhiser and has been published by Basic Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-08-02 with History categories.

What would George Washington do about weapons of mass destruction? How would Benjamin Franklin feel about unwed mothers? What would Alexander Hamilton think about minorities in the military? Examining a host of issues from terrorism to women's rights, acclaimed historian Richard Brookhiser reveals why we still turn to the Founders in moments of struggle, farce, or disaster. Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, Hamilton, Madison, Adams and all the rest have an unshakable hold on our collective imagination. We trust them more than today's politicians because they built our country, they wrote our user's manuals-the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution-and they ran the nation while it was still under warranty and could be returned to the manufacturer. If anyone knows how the U.S.A. should work, it must be the Founders. Brookhiser uses his vast knowledge to apply their views to today's issues. He also explores why what the Founders would think still matters. Written with Brookhiser's trademark eloquence and wit, while drawing on his deep understanding of American history, What Would the Founders Do? sheds new light on the disagreements and debates that have shaped our country from the beginning. Now, more than ever, we need the Founders-inspiring, argumentative, amusing know-it-alls-to help us work through the issues that divide us.

As wisdom has it, time on earth and tide in the ocean wait for no man. It’s also true that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step; but a journey from here to hell and back, may never be a pleasant story to tell. “Game of Chains” is a true story, told in support of besieged and struggling people worldwide; it’s also a story, told to empower beleaguered and disadvantaged people around the world. It is undeniable that rising from the plantations of slavery to the highest offices in the land is nothing short of a miracle. Similarly, rising from the homelands of Apartheid to the highest offices in the motherland is equally, nothing short of a miracle. Similarly, rising from the concentration camps of Auschwitz, back to the Promised Land is equally, nothing short of a miracle. Finally, rising from the obscurity of red Indians and chiefs to today’s thriving Tribal Nations is surely, nothing short of a miracle. But what is even more miraculous is that, such shameful atrocities and such heinous crimes against humanity have all happened in human society. Nevertheless, such amazing triumphs of good over evil, and such astounding achievements of repressed people around the world, from the most humble beginnings in bondage to the highest levels of human dignity, have also happened in human society. “Game of Chains” is a story of one race of people, sent on a treacherous journey to hell and back, and yet, the essence of my story came to fulfillment right before our eyes in this generation of our lifetime. This is a story of the struggle for dignity among the various races, cultures, colors and religions within the largest melting pot on earth. Find out how the new world became a multi-racial, multi-cultural, multi-colored, and multi-religious society, even before the greatest Union was formed. This story also chronicles the reflections, recollections, lamentations, opinions, and beliefs of the author. Born and raised in the former Gold Coast colony, the author strikes an interesting similarity between himself and the father of the 44th President of the United States; each came to this country in pursuit of his dream of college education; at least, that’s what they thought. Find out what happened in each of their separate lives in the melting pot. Get to the roots of the struggle; find out the origin of the struggle for freedom, justice, dignity, and equality in the melting pot. Find out how the stone that the builders rejected became the cornerstone on the land. Find out how the finest mansion and the greatest monument in the land, build by slave labor, reserved only for nobility, became residence of descendants of the slaves who built it. Find out all about the messenger sent on a special mission from Africa. I grew up in the small canoe-fishing town of Christiansborg, Osu, on the Atlantic coast of West Africa. As a child, I was fortunate enough to attend the schools that the early Missionaries built during the colonial era. Growing up under the giant shadow of the infamous Christiansborg Castle; I quickly learnt what many in our community already knew. It was common knowledge that our peaceful and picturesque seaside neighborhood, was one of the most brutal slave trading centers in Africa; next only to the iniquitous Cape Coast Castle; few hundred miles west of my hometown, and the notorious Elmina Castle, further to the west of my hometown. All three colossal castles, still stand today on the sandy shores and salty waters of the Atlantic Ocean; each colonial castle, acting as a giant window, looking back in retrospect to the ills of the colonial era and the evils of the slavery era, even to this very day. I decided to write this book and tell this story, when this nation elected its first-ever African American President in almost three centuries. To me, this is the greatest, most historically significant change that ever happened since the new world was discovered. I wrote this book solely in honor of the brave heroes and gallant legends of the Struggle, from Slavery to Presidency and Leader of the free world. Thanks for checking out my story and may God bless.

Steel Pier written by Steve Liebowitz and has been published by Arcadia Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-02 with Photography categories.

Steel Pier details the history of this historic "Showplace of the Nation" in "America's Playground"--Atlantic City. Atlantic City has worn the tag of "America's Playground" since its earliest days, so it is only natural that its biggest and most well-known icon, the Steel Pier, would be known as the "Showplace of the Nation." Over the course of 80 years, from 1898 to 1978, Steel Pier developed from a quiet, genteel amusement that featured light classical music and cakewalks to a vast entertainment complex that offered movies, big-name vaudeville acts, exhibits, big bands, rock bands, and the Water Circus with its famed diving horse. What makes this even more compelling is that one could spend the entire day on the pier and take all of this in for one small admission fee.

Exploding the curious myth that the ocean is a barrier rather than a highway for communication, this unusual interdisciplinary study examines the English Atlantic context of early American life. From the winterless Caribbean to the ice-locked Hudson Bay, maritime communications in fact usually met the legitimate expectations for frequency, speed, and safety, while increased shipping, new postal services, and newspapers hastened the exchange of news. These changes in avenues of communications reflected--and, in turn, enhanced--the political, economic, and social integration of the English Atlantic between 1675 and 1740. As Steele deftly describes the influence of physical, technological, socioeconomic, and political aspects of seaborne communication on the community, he suggests an exciting new mode of analyzing Colonial history.
