For the past half century, the Indonesian military has depicted the 1965-66 killings, which resulted in the murder of approximately one million unarmed civilians, as the outcome of a spontaneous uprising. This formulation not only denied military agency behind the killings, it also denied that the killings could ever be understood as a centralised, nation-wide campaign. Using documents from the former Indonesian Intelligence Agency’s archives in Banda Aceh this book shatters the Indonesian government’s official propaganda account of the mass killings and proves the military’s agency behind those events. This book tells the story of the 3,000 pages of top-secret documents that comprise the Indonesian genocide files. Drawing upon these orders and records, along with the previously unheard stories of 70 survivors, perpetrators, and other eyewitness of the genocide in Aceh province it reconstructs, for the first time, a detailed narrative of the killings using the military’s own accounts of these events. This book makes the case that the 1965-66 killings can be understood as a case of genocide, as defined by the 1948 Genocide Convention. Hubungan antara Indonesia, khususnya Aceh dengan Dataran Cina dimulai semenjak lancarnya transportasi laut. Kontak budaya antara Cina dan Aceh secara diplomasi diawali pada abad 13 dan 15 M. Pada suatu lawatan utusan diplomat Cina pergi ke Aceh menyerahkan Lonceng Cakradonya kepada Raja Aceh pada tahun 1409 M, sebagai lambang persahabatan. Sebaliknya Raja Aceh mengirimkan utusan Aceh (Duta Besar) ke Cina yaitu Zainal Abidin Dan khususya pada Musim dingin tahun ke 1413 berlayarlah utusan Cina ke Samudra termasuk ke Aceh. Hubungan diplomasi dibarengi dengan hubungan bisnis yang saling menguntungkan sehingga kedua bangsa tersebut terjalin atas dasar saling menghargai. Selanjutnya setelah terjadi kekacauan politik dan ekonomi di Daratan Cina, sehingga mengakibatkan migrasi besar-besaran orang Tiongkok ke Nanyang (Asia Tenggara), sehingga masyarakat Cina terpaksa mengadu nasibnya di Nusantara dengan bekerja apa saja asal dapat mempertahankan hidupnya di perantauan. Bekerja tanpa kenal lelah membuat etnis Cina perantauan berhasil dalam bidang ekonomi, politik dan budaya. Fenomena tersebut terlihat etnis Cina dipandang oleh Belanda sebagai kelas menengah bersama Timur Asing lainnya. Di bidang politik etnis Cina dapat menyatukan dirinya dengan pemerintah setempat seraya mempertahankan edentitas kecinaan mereka. Sedangkan identitas Cina sebelum dan setelah kemerdekaan Indonesia mempnyai identitas ganda yaitu identitas Indonesia dan Cina. Pada masa revolusi kebudayaan di Cina pada tahun 1966 terjadi perubahan besar-besaran di Cina dan berpengaruh terhadap Cina di Indonesia. Karena waktu itu etnis Cina dianggap berhaluan komunis. Sedangkan komunis adalah sangat dibenci di Indonesia. Akhirnya pudarlah kebudayaan Cina termasuk di Aceh. Etnis Cina di Aceh pada peristiwa komunis mereka sebagian hijrah ke Medan Sumatra Utara dan pulang ke daratan Cina. Dan yang lainnya menetap di Aceh. Etnis Cina di Aceh mayoritas suku Khek, dan berbahasa Khek bersama etnis mereka. Sedangkan bahasa Indonesia digunakan sebagai bahasa kedua. Dan sebagian dari mereka dapat berbahasa Aceh bila bermitra bisnis dengan orang Aceh. Etnis Cina yang tinggal di tempat pecinaan sangat sedikit yang dapat berbahasa Aceh.

Armed separatist movements in Papua, East Timor and Aceh have been a serious problem for Indonesia's central government. This book examines the policies of successive Indonesian governments to contain secessionist forces, focusing in particular on Jakarta's response towards the armed separatist movement in Aceh. Unlike other studies of separatism in Indonesia, this book concentrates on the responses of the central government rather than looking only at the separatist forces. It shows how successive governments have tried a wide range of approaches including military repression, offers of autonomy, peace talks and a combination of these. It discusses the lessons that have been learned from these different approaches and analyzes the impact of the tsunami, including the successful accommodation of former rebels within an Indonesian devolved state structure and the expanding implementation of Islamic law.
