Selected Poems written by Herman Gorter and has been published by Arimei Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-02 with Poetry categories.

This is the most extensive selection in English of poems by one of the all-time great Dutch poets, Herman Gorter (1864-1927). A companion volume to M. Kruijff's translation of the epic May, this book welcomes the reader to the rich spectrum of Gorter's lyric verse. The selection traces the stages of Gorter's career as a poet. It opens with 22 poems from his introvertive 'sensitivist' Verses (Verzen, 1890) which have been called the beginning of modern Dutch poetry. These are followed by poems from later collections in which Gorter was transitioning to a less self- and more world-focused perspective. In the subsequent passages from the long epic Pan (1912/1916), he has clearly become a 'socialist' poet, albeit in a unique visionary sense. He is now pursuing a theme which will obsess him for the rest of his life: how to address the object of his love as both an individual woman and an incarnate summation of all humanity. The rest of the book comprises the first publication in English of Gorter's little-known last work Lyrics (Liedjes,1930). Haft's judicious abridgment reserves the structure, erotic themes, and lyric high points of this outstanding sequence which originally occupied three volumes. In Haft's version, Gorter sounds the way he should sound: musical and sensitive, at times groping, at other times jubilant, always sure of himself and amazing. For readers of English it will be a feast to be able to make his acquaintance via this translation. - Piet Gerbrandy, winner of the Herman Gorter Prize

The Folks written by Ruth Suckow and has been published by University of Iowa Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-02-01 with Fiction categories.

Here is an introspective, poignant portrait of an American family during a time of sweeping changes. Now nearly sixty years after it first appeared, Suckow's finest work still displays a thorough realism in its characters' actions and aspirations; the uneasy compromises they are forced to make still ring true. Suckow's talent for retrospective analysis comes to life as she examines her own people—Iowans, descendants of early settlers—through the lives of the Ferguson family, living in the fictional small town of Belmond, Iowa. Using her gift of creating three-dimensional, living characters, Suckow focuses on personal differences within the family and each member's separate struggle to make sense of past and present, to confront a pervasive sense of loss as a way of life disappears.

The Last Of The Light written by Peter Davidson and has been published by Reaktion Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-15 with History categories.

Neither day nor night, twilight has long exerted a fascination for Western artists, thinkers, and writers, while haunting the Romantics and intriguing philosophers and scientists. In The Last of the Light, Peter Davidson takes readers through our culture’s long engagement with the concept of twilight—from the melancholy of smoky English autumn evenings to the midnight sun of northern European summers and beyond. Taking in poets and painters, Victorians and Romans, city and countryside, and deftly combining memoir, literature, philosophy, and art history, Davidson shows how the atmospheric shadows and the in-between nature of twilight has fired the imagination and generated works of incredible beauty, mystery, and romance. Ambitious and brilliantly executed, this is the perfect book for the bedside table, richly rewarding and endlessly thought-provoking.
