Police work is heroic, dangerous, tragic, and stressful. It is also funny. I spent twenty years with the NYC Transit Police and NYPD and without a doubt, the funniest stories I ever heard were from cops. Cops can find something funny in almost anything, regardless of how dark or morbid. Dark humor is a necessary defense mechanism in policing. It allows police officers to cope with the insanity they deal with on a daily basis.

Protecting the southern border of America is about as stressful as it gets for a law enforcement officer. Sometimes, you have to laugh to maintain your sanity. When one stops to think about it for a second, it becomes clear that police officers must come across some of the craziest, most eccentric, and most unexpected aspects of everyday society as a fundamental part of their job, whether it be on the streets of New York City or the Mexican border. If only a police officer with a sense of humor decided to write some of the best stories down...? That's exactly what Robert L. Bryan does best. As a former NYC cop and Border Patrol Agent, Bryan's been in the thick of it for most of his career, treading the thin blue line between civility and chaos. Along the way, he's come across some seriously bizarre characters, and some even more bizarre situations. Sometimes, a man has just got to laugh at the ridiculousness of it all, and with his talent for turning a phrase and spinning a good yarn, Dark Knights 2: The Dark Humor of Police Officers - Border Patrol Edition spins plenty of hilarious tales which range from the horrifyingly funny to the downright weird while Bryan worked his first law enforcement job on the southern border Dark Knights 2 manages to not just be a fantastic piece of light entertainment for those curious about the laughs within law enforcement, it also offers a truly fascinating insight into some of the more unexpected aspects of the job of policing America's border. This darkly funny and somewhat twisted collection of tales and memories will not only make you laugh, it will also get you thinking about today's headlines and the role the Border Patrol plays in society today, and where the agency needs reform, reevaluation, and outright applause.

Everything has an origin. For a police officer, that starting point is the Police Academy. It is the months of training at the police academy that prepares the new cop mentally and physically to handle the complex, sensitive, and dangerous life on patrol. It is also the first taste of the dark cop sense of humor. Humor is a very important stress relieving tool for a Police Officer. In the prior volumes of the Dark Knights series, the author draws on his career as a Police Officer and Border Patrol Agent to illustrate how funny cops can be, even in situations that may appear to be dark and tragic. In this volume of Dark Knights, the author details his time as a Police Academy instructor and supervisor to demonstrate that the dark cop sense of humor is not reserved for patrol - it begins at the Police Academy. When you think about great leaders, who comes to mind? Impactful figures like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., or perhaps Winston Churchill. In a huge organization like the New York City Police Department many great leaders have worn the uniform, particularly in the senior management ranks of captain and above. What leadership traits are required to become an NYPD captain. Is the ability to inspire and motivate required? Must these leaders possess vision to see the bigger picture? Do they need to possess empathy for their team members? Do NYPD leaders need to be innovative and creative? The answer is that NYPD captains need none of these leadership qualities. All they require are three lucky Saturdays.

This is a book about the comics genre and language, how these were used to create Batman, and how that character's longevity is largely due to the medium's unique formal qualities. It argues that Batman's core appeal is his mythic nature which allows him to transcend changes in reader tastes, the vicissitudes of the comics industry, and the changing media landscape. While including some historical elements, it is mostly a study of how the formal aspects of comics are able to evoke uniquely mythic qualities that have made Batman such a long-lived cultural phenomenon and how efforts to adapt these qualities into other media, particularly live-action feature films, have succeeded or failed based on the strategies employed. The book sheds light both on comics as a medium and art form with its own language, syntax and codes and on the process of adaptation--a growing area of study, given Hollywood's continuing interest in working with comic book superheroes.

This book examines political humor as a reaction to the lost war, the post-war chaos, and antisemitic violence in Hungary between 1918 and 1922. While there is an increased body of literature on Jewish humor as a form of resistance and a means of resilience during the Holocaust, only a handful of studies have addressed Jewish humor as a reaction to physical attacks and increased discrimination in Europe during and after the First World War. The majority of studies have approached the issue of Jewish humor from an anthropological, cultural, or linguistic perspective; they have been interested in the humor of lower- or lower-middle-class Jews in the East European shtetles before 1914. On the other hand, this study follows a historical and political approach to the same topic and focuses on the reaction of urban, middle-class, and culturally assimilated Jews to recent events: to the disintegration of the Dual Monarchy, the collapse of law and order, increased violence, the reversal of Jewish emancipation and the rise of new and more pernicious antisemitic prejudices. The study sees humor not only as a form of entertainment and jokes as literature and a product of popular culture, but also as a heuristic device to understand the world and make sense of recent changes, as well as a means to defend one’s social position, individual and group identity, strike back at the enemy, and last but not least, to gain the support and change the hearts and minds of non-Jews and neutral bystanders. Unlike previous scholarly works on Jewish resistance during the Holocaust, this study sees Budapest Jewish humor after WWI as a joint adventure: as a product of urban and Hungarian culture, in which Jewish not only played an important role but also cofounded. Finally, the book addressed the issue of continuity in Hungarian history, the "twisted road to Auschwitz": whether urban Jewish humor, as a form of escapism, helped to desensitize the future victims of the Holocaust to the approaching danger, or it continued to play the same defensive and positive role in the interwar period, as it had done in the immediate aftermath of the Great War.

A NEW YORK TIMES Bestseller! Hailed as a comics masterpiece, THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS is Frank Miller's (300 and SIN CITY) reinvention of the legend of Batman. It remains an undisputed classic, one of the most influential stories ever told in comics, and is a book cited by the filmmakers as an inspiration for the most recent Batman movies. It is ten years after an aging Batman has retired and Gotham City has sunk deeper into decadence and lawlessness. Now, as his city needs him most, the Dark Knight returns in a blaze of glory. Joined by Carrie Kelly, a teenage female Robin, Batman takes to the streets to end the threat of the mutant gangs that have overrun the city. And after facing off against his two greatest enemies, the Joker and Two-Face, for the final time, Batman finds himself in mortal combat with his former ally, Superman, in a battle that only one of them will survive. This collection is hailed as a comics masterpiece and was responsible for the launch of the Christopher Nolan Batman movies. This volume collects BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS #1-4.
