The only illustrated collection of Wells' horror fiction currently on the market, this anthology begins and closes each story with informed critical commentary and uses crisp and unsettling illustrations to usher its reader into Wells' stark and dangerous Darwinian world.H. G. Wells has been rightfully called the father of modern science fiction, bringing a level of discombobulating other-ness to his fantasies which would be borrowed in the fanciful horrors of H. P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, and Stephen King. While his name is more closely associated with science fiction, his contributions to supernatural fiction, body horror, murder tales, dark mysteries, ghost stories, and weird fiction were brilliant. Containing Lovecraft and Bierce's cynicism, his writing is nonetheless freshened by his Darwinian education -- one which foresaw a universe crawling with hostile (if seemingly innocuous) competitors: man-eating squid, vampiric orchids, greedy demons, ghostly moths, and Innsmouthian fish people. The tales included herein are guaranteed to surprise, disturb, and haunt.TALES INCLUDED in this ANNOTATED EDITION:The Moth | The Red Room | The Stolen Body | Pollock and the Porroh Man | The Inexperienced Ghost | The Door in the Wall | In the Abyss | The Sea Raiders |The Valley of the Spiders | The Late Mr Elvesham | The Flowering of the Strange Orchid | A Dream of Armageddon | The Cone | The Magic Shop |The Country of the Blind

Short Story Press Presents An Illustrated Warning by Matthew Kilpatrick “An Illustrated Warning” is a carefully crafted and creepy tale designed to unsettle and chill you. You’ll be held rapt to attention as the dread sets in and things go from odd to eerie and then from eerie to utterly frightening. There is plenty of fright in this story, which is made up of several elements that work together to create a terrifying whole. • The mystery of a young man’s missing grandfather • A collection of bizarre and horrid illustrations that serves as a warning against entering a forbidden room • A slowly revealed discovery of exactly what dark secret the room holds • A seemingly inexplicable nightmare for the main characters • A suspenseful attempt to escape • The aftermath of their traumatic experience. “An Illustrated Warning” allows readers who want to give themselves chills to share the experience of the two main characters. It will draw you in and make you think twice before going into rooms in basements. If you want to get the maximum scare quotient, read it alone, at night, in a large house with a dark, musty basement. The frightening pictures found early on are only the beginning of a much more terrifying truth. Short Story Press publishes short stories written by everyday writers.

It is the year 4022; all of the ancient country of Usa has been buried under many feet of detritus from a catastrophe that occurred back in 1985. Imagine, then, the excitement that Howard Carson, an amateur archeologist at best, experienced when in crossing the perimeter of an abandoned excavation site he felt the ground give way beneath him and found himself at the bottom of a shaft, which, judging from the DO NOT DISTURB sign hanging from an archaic doorknob, was clearly the entrance to a still-sealed burial chamber. Carson's incredible discoveries, including the remains of two bodies, one of then on a ceremonial bed facing an altar that appeared to be a means of communicating with the Gods and the other lying in a porcelain sarcophagus in the Inner Chamber, permitted him to piece together the whole fabric of that extraordinary civilization.

Includes "The Old Nurse's Story," "The Poor Clare," "Lois The Witch," "The Grey Woman," and "Curious, If True." Elizabeth Gaskell was born on September 29, 1810 to a Unitarian clergyman, who was also a civil servant and journalist. Her mother died when she was young, and she was brought up by her aunt in Knutsford, a small village that was the prototype for Cranford, Hollingford and the setting for numerous other short stories. In 1832, she married William Gaskell, a Unitarian clergyman in Manchester. She participated in his ministry and collaborated with him to write the poem Sketches among the Poor in 1837. Our Society at Cranford was the first two chapters of Cranford and it appeared in Dickens' Household Words in 1851. Dickens liked it so much that he pressed Gaskell for more episodes, and she produced eight more of them between 1852 and 1853. She also wrote My Lady Ludlow and Lois the Witch, a novella that concerns the Salem witch trials.
