Elektroakustische Musik hat auch vor der DDR nicht Halt gemacht: Es wurden westliche Werke rezipiert und auch, wenn es erst ab Mitte der 80er Jahre geeignete Studios in der DDR gab, haben einige Komponisten kreative Möglichkeiten gefunden, sich mit elektroakustischer Klangerzeugung und -bearbeitung zu beschäftigen. Im vorliegenden Band werden die treibenden Akteure und Institutionen, zu denen neben Studios auch Festivals und Ensembles gehörten, beleuchtet. Es wird zudem der Frage nachgegangen, wie die elektroakustischen Kompositionsmittel in den Werken, die in der DDR entstanden sind, eingesetzt wurden und ob es hier einen Zusammenhang mit den ästhetischen Vorgaben der DDR-Kulturpolitik gab. Anhand von zeitgenössischen Rezensionen elektroakustischer Werke und Aufführungen wird dargestellt, wie sich ein Wandel in der DDR-Kulturpolitik insbesondere in der Beurteilung vom Verhältnis des ausübenden Musikers zur Technik, von inhuman zu fortschrittlich, vollzieht.

1957 nahmen polnische Komponisten erstmals an den berühmten Darmstädter Ferienkursen teil, nachdem sie jahrelang von der musikalischen Entwicklung des Westens isoliert gewesen waren. Diese polnisch-westlichen Begegnungen und die musikalischen Anregungen im Werk polnischer Komponisten beleuchtet die vorliegende Studie. Angesichts des sich zuspitzenden Kalten Krieges war der Besuch der polnischen Künstler in Westdeutschland nicht ohne Brisanz. Während auf politischer Ebene kaum ein Dialog möglich war, ereignete sich im Bereich der zeitgenössischen Musik ein lebendiger Austausch zwischen Polen und der westlichen Avantgarde über den Eisernen Vorhang hinweg. Dafür mussten zahlreiche Hürden überwunden werden, die Begegnungen bedeuteten jedoch gleichzeitig eine immense Bereicherung für beide Seiten. In der Arbeit werden strukturelle Aspekte der polnisch-westlichen Begegnungen – Entwicklung der Beziehungen, Teilnehmer, Programmeinbindung, bürokratische Hürden – wie auch die Rezeption westlicher Kompositionstechniken durch polnische Komponisten untersucht.

The political control of music in the Third Reich has been analysed from several perspectives, and with ever increasing sophistication. However, music in Germany after 1945 has not received anything like the same treatment. Rather, there is an assumption that two separate musical cultures emerged in East and West alongside the division of Germany into two states with differing economic and political systems. There is a widely accepted view of music in West Germany as 'free', and in the East subject to party control. Toby Thacker challenges these assumptions, asking how and why music was controlled in Germany under Allied Occupation from 1945-1949, and in the early years of 'semi-sovereignty' between 1949 and 1955. The 're-education' of Germany after the Hitler years was a unique historical experiment and the place of music within this is explored here for the first time. While emphasizing political, economic and broader social structures that influenced the production and reception of different musical forms, the book is informed by a sense of human agency, and explores the role of salient individuals in the reconstruction of music in post-war Germany. The focus is not restricted to any one kind of music, but concentrates on those aspects of music, professional and amateur, live and recorded, which appeared to be the mostly highly charged politically to contemporaries. Particular attention is given to 'denazification' and to the introduction of international music. Thacker traces the development of a divide between Communist and liberal-democratic understandings of the place of music in society. The contested celebrations of the Bach Year in 1950 are used to highlight the role of music in the broader cultural confrontation between East and West. Thacker examines the ways in which central governments in East and West Germany sought to control and influence music through mechanisms of censorship and positive support. When the German Democratic Republic (GDR) was founded in 1949, its leaders did not position it as a new state. Instead, they represented East German socialism as the culmination of all that was positive in Germany's past. The GDR was heralded as the second German Enlightenment, a society in which the rational ideals of progress, Bildung, and revolution that had first come to fruition with Goethe and Beethoven would finally achieve their apotheosis. Central to this founding myth was the Germanic musical heritage. Just as the canon had defined the idea of the German nation in the nineteenth-century, so in the GDR it contributed to the act of imagining the collective socialist state. Composing the Canon in the German Democratic Republic uses the reception of the Germanic musical heritage to chart the changing landscape of musical culture in the German Democratic Republic. Author Elaine Kelly demonstrates the nuances of musical thought in the state, revealing a model of societal ascent and decline that has implications that reach far beyond studies of the GDR itself.
