Es ist wohl nicht überzogen zu behaupten, das Werk Karl Mays habe das deutsche Amerikabild von Generationen von begeisterten Lesern und darüber hinaus auch die allgemeine Vorstellung vom „Wilden Westen“ in Deutschland noch weit bis ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein entscheidend geprägt. Bei der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk Franz Kafkas dürfte man hingegen wohl kaum auf einen derartigen Beitrag zur deutschen Amerikaliteratur stoßen. Trotzdem hatte das Land Amerika auch für den 41 Jahre nach Karl May geborenen Autor nichts von seiner Faszination eingebüßt. May einerseits und Kafka andererseits formten aber gänzlich unterschiedliche Bilder Amerikas und der Verdacht, dass dies nicht nur mit deren zeitlicher Differenz zu erklären ist, erhärtet sich bei näherer Betrachtung. Jeffrey L. Sammons bringt diese Annahme auf den Punkt: „Was bilden solche Bilder ab?" Die beiden Texte werden inhaltlich anhand von zwei Kriterien miteinander verglichen, um somit bestimmte Kontinuitäten deutscher Amerikarezeption herauszustellen.
