Excerpt from Dartmoor Whatever its actual population may have been, imagination would people it with spirits and demons; while it needed no imagination to supply the storms, the blinding fogs and rains, the baying wolves that haunted its recesses. They were content to retain its old Celtic name for the river, and they applied this name to the moor as well; it became the moor of the Dart. The name Dart, supposed to be akin to Darent and Derwent, is almost certainly a deriv ative from the Celtic dwr, water. The moorland itself is a mass of granite upheaved in pre-glacial days, weathered by countless centuries into undula ting surfaces, pierced by jagged tors, and interspersed with large patches of bog and peat-mire. This is the biggest granitic area in England, the granite extending for about 225 square miles; though that which is known as Dartmoor Forest (never a forest in our accepted meaning of the word) is considerably smaller, having been much encroached upon by till age and enclosure. There is a further protrusion of granite on the Bodmin Moors, and again as far west as Scilly; while Lundy, in the Bristol Channel, belongs almost entirely to the same formation. Beneath the mire and peat, which are the decaying deposits of vegetable matter, lies a stratum of china-clay, which is worked productively to the south of the moors. Excerpt from A Book of Dartmoor At the request of my publishers I have written A Book of Dartmoor. I had already dealt with this upland district in two chapters in my Book of the West, vol i., "Devon." But in their opinion this wild and wondrous region deserved more particular treatment than I had been able to accord to it in the limited space at my disposal in the above-mentioned book. I have now entered with some fulness but by no means exhaustively, into the subject; and for those who desire a closer acquaintance with, and a more precise guide to the several points of interest on "the moor," I would indicate three works that have preceded this. I. Mr. J. Brooking Rowe in 1896 republished the Perambulations of Dartmoor, first issued by his great-uncle, Mr. Samuel Rowe, in 1848. The original work was written by a man whose mind was steeped in the crude archaelogical theories of his period. Excerpt from Gems in a Granite Setting: Beauties of the Lone Land of Dartmoor The views these rocky summits afford are, with scarcely an exception, extensive, and as most of the tors are situated on the borders of the Moor, the prospects are also varied. _but though varied there is no discordant element. The beholder may look into wild solitudes on one hand, and on the other upon an undulating country, where cornfields and woods, and pasture lands and orchards beautifully alternate, but there is nothing startling in the contrast. It is one, and a very marked one, but being Nature's handiwork no violence is done. Nearly the whole Of Devonshire can be seen from Dartmoor. In the southern part one looks upon the cliffs beyond Exmouth, and upon the Channel stretching far away down the Cornish coast; from the northern frontier the view is bounded by the Bristol Channel Off Bideford Bay and the hills of Exmoor; eastward a part Of Somerset is visible, and in the west the granite hills of Cornwall. And being a point of vantage whence so much of the Garden of the West can be viewed, it is itself also a feature in the picture pre sented from any elevated part of the county. Its outline is bold and distinct, and though not truly mountainous, it yet rises high above the surrounding country. Excerpt from A Green Hand's First Cruise, Vol. 1 of 2: Roughed Out From the Log-Book of Memory, of Twenty-Five Years Standing: Of Five Months in Dartmoor IN noting down these reminiscences, the writer is solely influenced by a desire to collect some Of the scattered leaves from memory's log, and to rescue a part of their contents from that Oblivion to which they are fast hasten ing. The remembrance of these by-gone events is the more cherished by the writer, from the lapse of time which has intervened since the occurrences took place, and the seeming unreality and dreamy Obscurity, through which they are viewed in after life. Excerpt from A Prison Chaplain on Dartmoor In writing the following reminiscences of my twenty-five years' experiences in the Prison on Dartmoor I have had two objects in view first, to interest my readers and excite their sympathy for a class of men who, although they are criminals, are not without their good points, as some of them have recently shown by their conduct in the late war. I was talking lately to an officer who was engaged in much of the heaviest fighting, and he told me that he had two ex-convicts in his company who were conspicuous by their bravery and readiness to volunteer for any dangerous duty. My second object is my own pleasure in recalling and transcribing the various incidents which, although now ancient history, are still vivid and interesting to me, as I hope the reading of them may be' to others. They are all at least true, and if there are no revelations of secrets hidden behind prison walls it is simply because no such secrets exist, or if they do they are unknown to me. For twenty-five years, day by day, and often all day long, I was in and out of the prison, inclosest contact with warders and prisoners, and only on two or three occasions did I witness anything that called for interference. Some times the tact and good temper of the warders under most trying and provocative circumstances was surprising; but let the men speak for them selves in the following pages. Excerpt from Down Dartmoor Way She dwelt in a spot greatly favoured by nature, a valley lying between red sandstone cliffs on the shores of Devon, where man has built himself a hundred little habitations. The sea kisses their feet; forests and green hills spread upwards behind them, for a throne; higher yet, Dartmoor stretches forth a finger and crowns that happy valley. A crown it is of granite and pine, laced about with many a winding pathway of white flint, jewelled with golden furze and amethystine heather.
