De participatiesamenleving belooft de burger meer macht en zeggenschap. Maar het tegendeel is het geval. In plaats van meer greep op de samenleving, neemt de onmacht van de burger toe. De politieke partijen worden geleid door een politieke elite met een neoliberale agenda. Bovendien zijn de verschillen in politieke opvattingen tussen de politieke hoofdstromen genivelleerd. Het gevolg van de politieke keuzes die gemaakt worden, is een toenemende armoede en maatschappelijke ongelijkheid. De kern van de participatiesamenleving is dat bedrijven vrijwel niet worden gecontroleerd, maar dat de controle op de burger alleen maar toe neemt. De controle is daarbij geïntensiveerd voor burgers die afhankelijk zijn van een sociale uitkering. Het gaat hier om sociale beheersing en niet primair om de geldstroom. De logica van de participatiesamenleving leidt ertoe dat politieke besluiten de beheersing van de burger voortdurend verder vergroten. Vertrouwt de politieke elite haar eigen burgers niet?

In recent decades contemporary Anglo-American philosophy has seen a boom in publications on the subject of ‘the emotions’. Most publications focus on the cognitive value of emotions and on their moral significance. The role which emotions play in religion, however, has sofar received little attention. In this volume a number of scholars present their research on ‘religious emotions’. Is there a category of ‘religious emotions’? What is so distinctive about them? Was there really a Christian-inspired repression of the emotions? Or did Christianity also made use of the human emotional potential? How is the relation between religion and emotions conditioned by the process of secularisation? How and why did a shift from the concept of ‘passion’ to that of ‘emotion’ occur from the eighteenth century on? This collection includes systematical treatments as well as historical approaches of these issues. The last part gives some paradigmatical cases of religious emotions, like emptiness and oceanic feeling. In the study of what constitutes a human being neither religion nor emotion can be neglected. The reader is invited to reflect on their interaction.

Stan Maes studeerde psychologie en pedagogiek aan de Universiteit Gent, waar hij ook zijn doctorstitel behaalde. Hij is emeritus hoogleraar gezondheidspsychologie aan de Universiteit Leiden, waar hij ook decaan was van de Faculteit Sociale en Gedragswetenschappen. Naast zijn wetenschappelijke expertise op het terrein van gezondheidsbevordering en psychologische aspecten van chronische ziekten, ontwikkelde hij op basis van zijn internationale ervaring ook een bijzondere belangstelling voor interculturele communicatie en crossculturele gedragsaspecten. Voor het jaar 2016 was Stan Maes benoemd op de wisselleerstoel Willy Calewaert, gevestigd door de vzw ‘De Mens Nu’ aan de Vrije Universiteit Brussel. De colleges die hij verzorgde, vormden de basis voor dit boek. Hij gaat daarbij uit van vragen als: Wat hebben we geleerd van de belangrijkste verlichte denkers? Wat zijn de belangrijkste gevolgen van de Verlichting voor onze westerse samenleving en wat is de kritiek op de Verlichting? Hij bespreekt ook de verdere ontwikkeling van het westers mensbeeld op basis van de persoonlijkheids- en de sociale psychologie en komt zo tot fundamentele menselijke doelen en sociale motieven die de basis vormen van onze samenleving. Hij benadrukt daarbij ook de invloed van cultuur op waarden en normen en toont aan dat een bepaalde culturele achtergrond kan leiden tot vooroordelen, discriminatie en antisociaal gedrag ten opzichte van mensen met een andere overtuiging of cultuur. Op basis hiervan worden huidige uitdagingen voor verlichtingsideeën vanuit een psycho-educatieve visie besproken, zoals het moderne nationalisme, migratie en culturele integratie, terrorisme en confrontatie met de islam. Tot slot wordt de vraag beantwoord of mensen die leven in een land dat verlichtingsprincipes respecteert, ook gelukkiger zijn.
