A comprehensive investigation of Hoffmann's "Serapiontic Principle" and what it implies for his oeuvre.Critics have long sought to elucidate the multilayered texts of E. T. A. Hoffmann by applying to them a particular set of theories and ideas that Hoffmann himself subsumed under the heading of the "Serapiontic Principle." This principle, which Hoffmann expounded in his collection of tales Die Serapionsbrüder, involves a complex intersection of the artist's faculties of imagination and perception. However, Hoffmann's mode of presenting his theory presents an unusual problem: rather than the usual form of an essay or treatise, he adopts a fictional framework, complete with a set of "characters"; this in turn sets up a number of perspectives on the theory itself. This combination of literary and theoretical elements presents a severe challenge to critics, and not surprisingly there has been little agreement about what the "principle" actually entails or its wider relevance. With the principle as prime focus, this book provides detailed analysis of a broadly based selection of Hoffmann's texts, both theoretical and literary. It offers new perspectives on his narrative invention and the range of his theoretical interests, thus redefining his place at the forefront of German Romanticism. 1m Jahre 1813, als E.T.A. Hoffmann mit der Niederschrift seines ersten Marchens begann, war das Projekt einer Romantischen Poesie langst gescheitert. Friedrich Schlegel, der Begriinder der romantischen Asthetik, hatte nach dem Ubertritt zur katholischen Kirche die Idee einer neuen mythischen Kunst aufgegeben; und selbst Ludwig Tieck, der noch 1812 eine Sammlung romantischer Marchen veroffentlichte, naherte sich immer mehr einer realistischen Erzahlweise an. Fur jun gere Autoren wie Eichendorff, die den Glauben an ein neues mytholo gisches Zeitalter nie geteilt hatten, war es ohnehin selbstverstandlich, daB sie das zwielichtige Reich der Phantasie hinter sich lieBen und die Aussohnung mit der Wirklichkeit suchten. Es scheint daher nahelie gend, auch die Werke Hoffmanns, die realistische und marchenhafte Motive in sich vereinen, in diese allgemeine literarische Entwicklung einzuordnen. Entgegen dem popularen Hoffmann-Bild laBt sich jedoch feststellen, daB die realistischen Zuge seiner Dichtung nicht aus dem Bestreben entstanden sind, sich von den Themen und Fragestellungen der romantischen Asthetik zu losen. Wenn Hoffmann sich mehr als seine Vorgiinger den Verhaltnissen des burgerlichen Lebens zuwendet, geschieht es vor aHem in der Absicht, die Anspruche des romantischen Kunstprogramms zu reflektieren. Seine humoristische Erzahlweise, die die imaginare Welt des Dichters mit den Zwangen der Wirklichkeit konfrontiert, dient gerade der Kritik an den uberzogenen Erwartungen der romantischen Asthetik.
