How did authors control the literary fates of fictional characters before the existence of copyright? Could a second author do anything with another author's character? Situated between the decline of the privilege system and the rise of copyright, literary borrowing in eighteenth-century Germany has long been considered unregulated. This book tells a different story. Characters before Copyright documents the surprisingly widespread eighteenth-century practice of writing fan fictionliterary works written by readers who appropriate preexisting characters invented by other authorsand reconstructs the contemporaneous debate about the literary phenomenon. Like fan fiction today, these texts took the form of sequels, prequels, and spinoffs. Analyzing the evolving reading, writing, and consumer habits of late-eighteenth-century Germany, Characters before Copyright identifies the social, economic, and aesthetic changes that fostered the rapid rise of fan fiction after 1750. Based on archival work and an ethnographic approach borrowed from legal anthropology, this book then uncovers the unwritten customary norms that governed the production of these works. Characters before Copyright thus reinterprets the eighteenth-century literary commons, arguing that what may appear to have been the free circulation of characters was actually circumscribed by an exacting set of rules and conditions. These norms translated into a unique type of literature that gave rise to remarkable forms of collaborative authorship and originality. Characters before Copyright provides a new perspective on the eighteenth-century book trade and the rise of intellectual property, reevaluating the concept of literary property, the history of moral rights, and the tradition of free culture.

In his popular book The Germans (1982), Stanford historian Gordon Craig remarked: "When German intellectuals at the end of the eighteenth century talked of living in a Frederican age, they were sometimes referring not to the monarch in Sans Souci, but to his namesake, the Berlin bookseller Friedrich Nicolai." Such was the importance attributed to Nicolai’s role in the intellectual life of his age by his own contemporaries. While long neglected by students of the period, who tended to accept the caricature of him as a philistine who failed to recognize Goethe’s genius, Nicolai has experienced a resurgence of interest among scholars reexploring the German Enlightenment and the literary marketplace of the eighteenth century. This book, drawing upon Nicolai’s large unpublished correspondence, rounds out the picture we have of Nicolai already as author and critic by focusing on his roles as bookseller and publisher and as an Aufkärer in the book trade.

The Goethe era of German literature was dominated by men. Women were discouraged from reading and scorned as writers; Schiller saw female writers as typical 'dilettantes'. But the attempt to exclude did not always succeed, and the growing literary market rewarded some women's determination. This study combines archival research, literary analysis, and statistical evidence to give a sociological-historical overview of the conditions of women's literary production. Highlighting many authors who have fallen into obscurity, this study tells the story of women who managed to write and publish at a time when their efforts were not welcomed. Although eighteenth-century gender ideology is an important pre-condition for women's literary production, it does not necessarily determine the praxis of their actual experiences, as this study makes clear. Using a range of examples from a variety of sources, the real story of women who read, wrote, and published in the shadow of Goethe emerges.

Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: ‚Die guten Gedanken über das Spiel sind rar, was damit zusammenhängt, dass der theoretische Mensch nicht geneigt ist, das Spiel ernst zu nehmen. Er pflegt sich selbst ernst zu nehmen, und indem er dies tut, entzieht er dem Spiel jeden Ernst.’ Friedrich Georg Jünger. Einführung: Warum Spiel?: Aus einem glühenden Interesse für Gesellschaftsspiele und meiner Betätigung als deren Entwickler heraus ist mir während meines Studiums aufgefallen, dass sich die Wissenschaft mit dem Spiel kaum auseinandersetzt. Nein, man muss sogar sagen: Das Spiel wird (im deutschsprachigen Raum) ignoriert. Ich begann die Uni-Bibliotheken nach theoretischen Abhandlungen über ‚das Gesellschaftsspiel’ abzusuchen. Fasst man den Spielbegriff weiter, so bekommt man mehr, allerdings immer noch keine reichhaltige Auswahl an Literatur. Dieseverteilt sich vor allem auf Fachbibliotheken des Universitäts-Sportinstituts und der Pädagogik, ferner Publizistik, Anglistik und Philosophie. Historisch betrachtet gab es in den 1970-er Jahren einen kurzfristigen Boom zum Thema, fast ausschließlich im Bereich der (Reform-)Pädagogik. Um die Jahrtausendwende erscheint dann eine vielversprechende und moderne Disziplin, die ‘Game Studies’ oder deutsch ‘Spielforschung’. Die Game Studies setzen sich allerdings fast ausschließlich mit dem Computerspiel auseinander. Methodisch sind diese stark interdisziplinär und analysieren die Rezeptions- und Produktionsbedingungen des Computerspiels. Spiele nehmen einen wichtigen Platz in der kulturellen Entwicklung ein und man kann aus deren Erforschung einige Erkenntnisse gewinnen. Im Vorwort von ‚Spielen nach den Spielregeln’, wird das Spiel verglichen mit einem ‚microcosme de certains domaines ordonnés et réglés du monde réel, offre des parallèles aussi bien que des contrastes avec le macrocosme de notre vie quotidienne. Pour cette raison il n‘est pas étonnant que ces comportement humain dans tous ses aspects. La littérature sur le sujet [ ... ] est loin d‘être exhaustive.’. Der geordnete Mikrokosmos Spiel und Sport gewährt Einblick in unsere Lebenswelt indem Parallelen und Unterschiede aufgezeigt werden; im Zitatwird ebenfalls darauf hingewiesen, dass dieses Thema in der Literatur (der Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften) keineswegs erschöpfend behandelt wird.
