Quer durch alle Kulturen findet sich eine Fülle übereinstimmender Motive, Plots und Genres. Warum ist das so? Der Erfolg einer Geschichte bemaß sich vor Erfindung der Schrift schlicht danach, ob sie weitererzählt wurde. Weitererzählt wurde, was den größten Anklang bei den Zuhörern fand; Ähnliches geschieht jetzt wieder in den massenmedial vermittelten Narrationen der modernen Populärkultur. Zu suchen ist also nach relevanten Dispositionen, die allen Menschen gemeinsam sind.
