Brasilien ist das einzige Land in Lateinamerika, mit dem Deutschland eine strategische Partnerschaft hat. Die deutsch-brasilianischen Beziehungen sind politisch, wirtschaftlich und kulturell breit verankert. Beide Länder verfolgen außenpolitisch gemeinsame Ziele. Neben der Reorganisation der Vereinten Nationen und der Erweiterung des Sicherheitsrates treiben Brasilien und Deutschland eine Reform der globalen Finanzordnung voran. Auch für die internationale Klimaschutz- und Umweltpolitik zeigt man ähnliche Interessen. Diese basieren auf gemeinsamen Werten wie Sicherheit, Stabilität und Wohlstand. Brasilien ist der wichtigste Handelspartner Deutschlands in Lateinamerika. Mit mehr als 1000 Unternehmen ist São Paulo einer der größten Standorte der deutschen Wirtschaft weltweit. Durch zahlreiche bilaterale Projekte und den Austausch von Wissenschaftlern wurde die Kooperation auch im Bereich von Kultur und Bildung vertieft. Obgleich die deutsch-brasilianischen Beziehungen befriedigend und vielversprechend sind, kommen den Deutschen bei Brasilien zuallererst Samba, Fußball und Sonnenschein in den Sinn. Solche Einstellungen zu kulturspezifischem Verhalten entstehen aus einem Mangel an interkulturellen Kompetenzen, aus Unwissenheit oder durch die Verknüpfung von in den Medien vermittelten Informationen mit vorhandenem Wissen.

"Decentering" has fast become a dynamic approach to the study of American cultural and diplomatic history. But what precisely does decentering mean, how does it work, and why has it risen to such prominence? This book addresses the attempt to decenter the United States in the history of culture and international relations both in times when the United States has been assumed to take center place. Rather than presenting more theoretical perspectives, this collection offers a variety of examples of how one can look at the role of culture in international history without assigning the central role to the United States. Topics include cultural violence, inverted Americanization, the role of NGOs, modernity and internationalism, and the culture of diplomacy. Each subsection includes two case studies dedicated to one particular approach which while not dealing with the same geographical topic or time frame illuminate a similar methodological interest. The Nazi Party and the German Communities Abroad examines the German Nazi Party’s actions around the world in the 1930s and 1940s.
