This volume explores the many facets and ongoing transformations of our visual identities in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. How to Make Our Signs Clear is the result of an international cooperation between European and Brazilian Peircean scholars (I. A. Ibri, E. Višňovský, C. Paolucci and others) and strives to dispel simplifications of Peirce ́s semiotic as well as to collect various insights into it and into its consequences for philosophy, especially philosophy of language, pragmatism and epistemology. The central theme of this book is the notion of the sign as a specific triadic relational unit, treated from various perspectives and applied to various fields of philosophy: semeiotic knowledge grows up from the discussions, common interests and possible conflicts between the readers of Peirce ́s works. This book does not offer a general overview of Peirce ́s theory of signs, but rather various analyses of consequences of some capacities of his semiotic.

Kunst aus der DDR wurde über zwei Dekaden meist nur als zeithistorisches und kulturpolitisches Dokument einer problematischen staatssozialistischen Vergangenheit diskutiert und erforscht. Marlene Heidels kulturwissenschaftliche Untersuchung nimmt dagegen Werke dieser Provenienz als künstlerische Zeugnisse ernst und verbindet sie mit gegenwärtigen ästhetischen Bildwelten. Im Kunstarchiv Beeskow lagert ein weltweit einzigartiger Bestand von Kunst aus der DDR. Die von der Autorin beschriebene Geschichte dieses Sammlungsortes mit ihren Brüchen und Verzweigungen gibt Aufschluss über den öffentlichen sowie akademischen Diskurs seit 1989. Zugleich belegt sie mit zahlreichen Beispielen die Lebendigkeit und vielfältigen Nutzungsmöglichkeiten des Archivs und schlägt eine Alternative zur einseitigen Historisierung der darin aufbewahrten Werke vor. Dazu entwickelt sie eine eigenständige theoretische Perspektive, die Zugang zur ästhetischen Funktion und zum sozial-historischen Kontext dieses kulturellen Erbes bietet und die Reproduktion politischer Spaltungen meidet. Schließlich werden vier Werke aus dem Kunstarchiv Beeskow exemplarisch als ästhetische Formen und gesellschaftliche Wissens- und Informationsspeicher analysiert. Das Sprechen über Liebe bezieht sich stets auf Unbestimmtheit. Welche Bestimmtheitseffekte mit diesem Erfordernis erzeugt werden, lotet die diskursanalytische Studie in den Artikulationen über Liebe aus. Unter Rückgriff auf poststrukturalistische Positionen von Butler, Derrida, Foucault und Laclau analysiert Kerstin Jergus die Figurationen des Liebesdiskurses als Verflechtung subjektivierender und soziosymbolischer Figuren. Das hierbei markierte Differenzverhältnis von Individuum und sozialer Ordnung verbindet schließlich auch analytische und bildungstheoretische Fragehorizonte, in denen Subjektivität in Relation zu Sozialität formuliert wird.
