Viele evangelische Gottesdienstordnungen kennen ein Sündenbekenntnis, das im Wechsel mit der Gemeinde gesprochen und oft durch einen Vergebungszuspruch abgeschlossen wird. Dieses sog. Confiteor hat im Wechsel der Zeiten immer wieder unterschiedliche Formen angenommen. Ähnlich vielfältig wie die Confiteor-Varianten sind zudem die Begründungen, die für oder gegen ein liturgisch festgelegtes Sündenbekenntnis zu Beginn des Gottesdienstes vorgebracht werden. Die vorliegende Untersuchung geht der Geschichte des Confiteor nach. Sie beschreibt die Zusammenhänge zwischen textlicher Gestalt, Gottesdienstauffassung, Frömmigkeit, Lebensform und gesellschaftlichen Erwartungen und zeigt die Bedingungen auf, unter denen ein Confiteor im Gottesdienst Sinn machen kann. Studies to its form and function in the church service as well as the church life] Many Protestant liturgies have an order of Confession and Forgiveness which is spoken in dialogue between congregation and minister and often closes with the absolution. However, throughout the history of Christianity, the Confiteor has taken on many different shapes and varieties, for reasons as numerous as its variants. This study will critically explore historical questions concerning the Confiteor and describe the correlations between textual form, liturgical-theological conceptions, piety, ways of living together and social expectations. In conclusion, this study will formulate conditions under which a Confiteor could be meaningful in worship today. Guglielmo Sirleto has generally been acknowledged as a crucial contributor to defending the papacy's claims over St Peter's primacy, including the apostle's legendary arrival to Rome before his martyrdom. Sirleto established himself as a pivotal prelate, who assisted Pope Paul IV in rearranging the ceremonial apparatus for the solemn celebrations of the Cathedra Petri (St Peter's Throne). Scholars, however, were unable to properly examine his De praestantia basilicae Vaticanae, because the manuscripts of this discourse were never completely identified. The edition of this treatise will therefore primarily provide a reconstruction of Sirleto's working methods in readjusting the ceremonial solemnities prescribed for the feast day of the Cathedra Petri according to Curial Ceremony. The second discourse concerns, on the other hand, a description of the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore on the Esquiline Hill, which Sirleto composed for the Cardinal Bishop of Milan, Carlo Borromeo. In contrast to the edition of the first discourse in this volume, the Trattato sopra la chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore is presented according to the correspondence between Borromeo and Sirleto.

This collected volume is dedicated to the role of prayer books in lay piety in medieval and early modern contexts. Instead of focusing on individual examples, it places them within the broader genre of devotional literature and considers them in connection with prevailing cultural, religious and artistic developments, taking into account the Reformation, the printing press and growing interest in lay piety, in the context of increasing individualism, developing literacy, privatization and/or personalization of religion. Contextualising devotional literature, the volume refines understandings of religious practice fostered by traditional Catholicism and early modern Protestantism and its relationship with the written word, locating the use of books within a devotional 'diet' that included oral recitation of prayers as well as contemplation of images. Stressing continuities, often against the grain of existing literature, this volume highlights differences between regional cultures of prayer in contrast to norms set by the universal Church and emphasizes the tension between public/communal and private/individual devotion.
