Bis heute nahezu unentdeckt geblieben ist eine literarische Gattung, die zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts im deutschen Kabarett einen enormen Aufschwung erlebte, in den dreißiger Jahren jedoch völlig in der Versenkung verschwand: Lieder von und über Dirnen. Detailreich und kurzweilig präsentiert der vorliegende Band, der nun in zweiter Auflage erscheint, eine Kulturgeschichte des deutschen Dirnenliedes. Anhand zahlreicher Gedichte, Chansons, Kabarett- und Volksliedern - sowohl von bekannten Autoren wie Wedekind, Brecht, Mehring, Tucholsky, Klabund, van Hoddis als auch von heute nahezu vergessenen - werden Ursprung und Bedeutung dieser Gattung untersucht. Der Autor weist nach, dass es das Dirnenlied als Volks- und Animierlied zwar bereits gab, es jedoch erst mit dem Naturalismus Einzug in die Lyrik hielt, um dann bei der jungen Generation deutscher Kabarettautoren regelrecht in Mode zu kommen. During the late nineteenth century the city of Berlin developed such a reputation for lawlessness and sexual licentiousness that it came to be known as the "Whore of Babylon." Out of this reputation for debauchery grew an unusually rich discourse around prostitution. In Berlin Coquette, Jill Suzanne Smith shows how this discourse transcended the usual clichés about prostitutes and actually explored complex visions of alternative moralities or sexual countercultures including the "New Morality" articulated by feminist radicals, lesbian love, and the "New Woman." Combining extensive archival research with close readings of a broad spectrum of texts and images from the late Wilhelmine and Weimar periods, Smith recovers a surprising array of productive discussions about extramarital sexuality, women’s financial autonomy, and respectability. She highlights in particular the figure of the cocotte (Kokotte), a specific type of prostitute who capitalized on the illusion of respectable or upstanding womanhood and therefore confounded easy categorization. By exploring the semantic connections between the figure of the cocotte and the act of flirtation (of being coquette), Smith’s work presents flirtation as a type of social interaction through which both prostitutes and non-prostitutes in Imperial and Weimar Berlin could express extramarital sexual desire and agency.

International exchange in European cultural life in the 19th and 20th centuries From the early nineteenth century till the middle of the twentieth century, cultures in Europe were primarily national. They were organized and conceived of as attributes of the nation states. Nonetheless, these national cultures crossed borders with an unprecedented intensity even before globalization transformed the very concept of culture. During that long period, European cultures have imported and exported products, techniques, values, and ideas, relying on invisible but efficient international networks. The central agents of these networks are considered mediators: translators, publishers, critics, artists, art dealers and collectors, composers. These agents were not only the true architects of intercultural transfer, they also largely contributed to the shaping of a common canon and of aesthetic values that became part of the history of national cultures. This book is part of an ongoing transnational turn in cultural history. Studies on the history of urban popular culture and the entertainment industries increasingly engage with the European or global circulation of genres, actors, and shows, especially during the period of massive growth and expansion of the sector from the 1870s to the 1930s. Nevertheless, a large part of this research remains focused on exchanges between Western and Central European, and North American metropolises. To provide a fuller picture of the emergence and cross-border transfer of different genres of popular culture, this volume investigates Northern, East Central, and Southern European cities and their relations with each other and the West. The authors analyze the mediating agents, transnational networks, and local responses to new forms of entertainment from Madrid to Vyborg, and from Istanbul to Reykjavík. Das französische Chanson ist ein intermediales Genre von nationaler und internationaler Tragweite. Im Zuge der Medienrevolutionen des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts erfährt die französische Chanson-Kultur eine gattungsgeschichtlich relevante Weiterentwicklung. Damit ist auch eine verstärkte nationale Markierung des nun international erfolgreichen Genres verbunden. Die vorliegende Studie liefert erstmalig eine umfassende kulturwissenschaftliche Untersuchung des ‹französischen Chansons›. Anhand eines mythentheoretischen Ansatzes wird die mediale Mehrdimensionalität des Chansons tiefergehend erforscht und die komplexe Vernetzungsstruktur des Genres dargelegt. Auf Grundlage einschlägiger Theorien zu modernen Mythen (H. Blumenberg, C. Lévi-Strauss, R. Barthes) zeigt die Autorin, dass das moderne französische Chanson eine ‹mythische Qualität› aufweist. Dies geschieht in einer philologischen Analyse von über 100 Chansons der letzten 150 Jahre und in einer Untersuchung repräsentativer Chanson-Ikonen. Inwiefern die ‹mythische Qualität› auch diskursiv erzeugt wird, macht schließlich die Beschäftigung mit der populärwissenschaftlichen Literatur zum Chanson deutlich.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2017 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Komparatistik, Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft, Note: 1,7, Freie Universität Berlin (Institut für Deutsche und Niederländische Philologie), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Bertolt Brecht befasste sich mit einer Vielzahl von Autoren der Weltliteratur, deren Werke auf die eine oder andere Weise Eingang in sein eigenes Schaffen fanden, sei es durch die Übernahme bestimmter Sprach- und Formstile, Motive und Themen, oder, in einigen Fällen, durch die Zitation ganzer Textpassagen aus der jeweiligen literarischen Vorlage. Im Bereich der erotischen Lyrik zeigen vor allem die „Augsburger Sonette“ eine Reihe von Parallelen zu den Sonetti lussuriosi und Ragionamenti des Pietro Aretinos auf. Da Brecht das literarische Oeuvre Aretinos wohlbekannt war, stellt sich hierbei die Ausgangsfrage, ob und in welchem Maße die Werke Aretinos Einfluss auf die erotische Lyrik Bertolt Brechts hatten. Aus diesem Grund wird in der nachfolgenden Untersuchung zunächst Brechts Beschäftigung mit der erotischen Lyrik des italienischen Barockliteraten in den Kontext der zu Beginn des vorigen Jahrhunderts populären Literaturgattung des „Dirnenlieds“ eingebettet. Dieser Kontextualisierung folgt ein Vergleich der Verwendung von Vulgärsprache als stilistisches Mittel bei Aretino und Brecht bei dem die Ursprünge dieser Stilform in der italienischen Lyrik beleuchtet werden. Anschließend erfolgt eine Analyse der Motive und thematischen Schwerpunkte, welche exemplarisch durch die Gegenüberstellung von Pietro Aretinos prosaischem Dialog des Sonetts Lehrstück Nr. 2 (Ratschläge einer älteren Fohse an eine jüngere ) aus Bertolt Brechts Augsburger Sonetten mit Aretinos Der Erste Tag – Wie Nanna ihr Töchterlein Pippa im Hurenberuf unterrichtet erfolgt. Ausgehend von dieser Analyse sollen die Liebeskonzeptionen von Brecht und Pietro Aretino untersucht und hinsichtlich der Tendenz zum Anti-Petrarkismus miteinander verglichen werden. Abschließend wird durch eine Zusammenfassung der zuvor betrachteten Punkte eine Beantwortung der Fragestellung gegeben.
