Der italienische Mediävist Cinzio Violante hat sein letztes größeres Werk dem Leben und Denken des belgischen Historikers Henri Pirenne gewidmet. Pirenne, im Ersten Weltkrieg in Deutschland interniert, wendet sich in dieser Zeit von der traditionellen nationalen Geschichtsschreibung ab und einer europäischen, sozialhistorischen Konzeption zu. Violante, selbst deutscher Kriegsgefangener im Zweiten Weltkrieg, findet in ihm einen Spiegel, in welchem er sein eigenes Erleben erkennen und verstehen kann. Dabei will er weder eine Geschichte der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, der beiden Weltkriege und ihrer politischen und ideellen Hintergründe schreiben, noch beabsichtigt er, die Verflochtenheit der damaligen deutschen Geschichtsschreibung in völkische, nationale und machtpolitische Ideologien zum Thema zu machen, obwohl dies laufend eine wichtige Rolle spielt. Er verfaßt vielmehr ein sehr persönliches Dokument von großer Authentizität, in dem er sich mit seiner Stellung zur deutschen und europäischen Geschichtssschreibung auseinandersetzt. Zum Problem wird Violante dabei die Kollision widersprüchlicher persönlicher Wahrnehmung bzw. Einschätzung Deutschlands. Zum einen erlebt er Deutschland als Militär- und Machtstaat - während seiner Gefangenschaft in Griechenland und als Internierter während des Krieges in Deutschland. Zum anderen findet er in Deutschland eine von ihm bewunderte wissenschaftliche und geistige Kultur, wie er sie als Student und junger Gelehrter kennengelernt hatte und die ihn zeitlebens fasziniert. Das Medium, in dem die Auseinandersetzungen mit den jeweiligen Gegenwarten, das äußere und innere Ringen Pirennes wie der deutschen Historiker, vor allem Violantes selbst, stattfinden, ist die Geschichte des Mittelalters: Sie ist der Ort unserer Herkunft, Spiegel unserer Wertvorstellungen und Emotionen sowie das Refugium, in dem Violante innere Ruhe findet.
