Erst in den späten fünfziger und sechziger Jahren setzte sich das Modell eines liberal-demokratischen, eines westlichen Europas durch. Die lange Zeit konkurrierenden Europakonzepte verortet Vanessa Conze sowohl politik- als auch sozialhistorisch. Nicht zuletzt geht sie der Frage nach, in welchem Verhältnis die unterschiedlichen Europaideen zum Nationalsozialismus und insbesondere den nationalsozialistischen Plänen einer europäischen Ordnung standen. Gerade in diesem Zusammenhang wird deutlich, dass die Identifikation von Europagedanken und freiheitlicher Demokratie erst das Ergebnis jüngerer politischer Entwicklungen ist und es in Deutschland bis weit in die Nachkriegszeit hinein dauerte, bis ältere antidemokratische, antiliberale oder antiwestliche Europavorstellungen überwunden waren.
