Einige Kritiker bemängeln zwar, dass ihm das Moment der Unwissenheit der agierenden Person, ebenso wie die Gegenwärtigkeit des Dargestellten fehlt. (Vgl. Stadler 2005, S. 33) Trotzdem, so scheint es, haben es der Film und seine Verörtlichung, das Kino, geschafft, eine kollektive Schaulust zu institutionalisieren. Grauen, Morde und Sexualakte sind nun einem breiten Publikum zugänglich geworden und machen den Rezipienten zum Komplizen, zum Mitwissenden oder auch zum Voyeur: „[The cinema] made voyeurs out of viewers [...] [because] the camera’s lens is more real than the eye.” (Denzin 1995, S. 26) Im Anschluss an diese These beschäftigt sich die folgende Arbeit mit der Frage, durch welche kinematographischen Besonderheiten und filmischen Stilmittel es möglich ist, Voyeurismus im Film zu erleben und den Rezipienten als Voyeur in die Narration einzubinden. Besonderes Augenmerk wird dabei auf den Blickstrukturen im intradiegetischen Raum sowie zwischen dem Rezipienten und der Leinwand liegen. Der erste Teil der Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit den Abhandlungen von Jean-Louis Baudry, Christian Metz, Jean-Paul Sartre, Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan und Laura Mulvey. Ziel ist es, einen umfassenden Überblick über die theoretischen Grundlagen zur „Illusionsmaschine“ (Handschuh-Heß 2000, S.46) Kino und der Skopophilie des Rezipienten zu erlangen. Die Arbeit erhebt hierbei nicht den Anspruch, die Theorien in ihrer vollständigen Komplexität zu betrachten. Vielmehr geht es darum, sie als theoretische Grundlage für die Analyse der „Voyeurfilme“ (Denzin 1995, S. 7) „Peeping Tom“ und „Eyes Wide Shut“ anzusehen. Diese werden im zweiten Teil der Arbeit in Bezug auf ihre Blickstrukturen, ihren intradiegetischen Voyeurismus und ihre potenzielle Wirkung auf den Rezipienten untersucht. Anschließend werden beide Filme miteinander verglichen. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, das Gebiet der voyeuristischen Blickstrukturen im Film intensiv zu beleuchten, sie an Beispielen zu belegen und dabei interdisziplinär (Medienwissenschaft, Soziologie, Psychologie) eine Brücke zu schlagen.

Auf dieser Grundlage erfolgt die Analyse der Voyeurfilme Peeping Tom von Michael Powell und Eyes Wide Shut von Stanley Kubrick. Beim Vergleich der beiden Filme werden die Anwendung des intradiegetischen Voyeurismus und der filmischen Stilmittel im Wandel herausgestellt. Im Buch wird das Gebiet der voyeuristischen Blickstrukturen im Film intensiv beleuchtet, an Beispielen belegt und eine interdisziplinäre Brücke geschlagen.
