In dieser religionsgeographisch angelegten Studie werden die Spuren des fr hen Christentums im kilikisch-isaurischen Bergland untersucht. Dabei wird eine bislang wenig beachtete Region ins Zentrum ger ckt und auf Basis der kaiserzeitlichen und sp tantiken epigraphischen, literarischen und arch ologischen Zeugnisse erforscht. Ausgehend von den zahlreichen j dischen Gemeinden entwickelten sich schon zur Zeit des Paulus die ersten christlichen Gemeinden. In sp terer Zeit waren die vielen verschiedenen M rtyrerkulte in den einzelnen St dten von berragender Bedeutung f r die Christianisierung der Landschaft. Neben vielen stark lokal verankerten Kulten erfuhren die Heilige Thekla und der Heilige Konon Verehrung in der ganzen Region und waren somit regionale Heilige. Ein dichtes Netz fr hbyzantinischer Kirchenbauten, die zum Teil noch heute gut erhalten sind, belegt die umfassende Christianisierung des Gebietes. Unter dem aus Isaurien stammenden Kaiser Zenon wurden die regionalen Kulte in der stlichen Reichsh lfte verbreitet. Die vorliegende Untersuchung der Kalykadnos-Region f hrt das Quellenmaterial zusammen und wertet es erstmals monographisch aus.

Konon von Bidana ist der Apostel der rauhen Landschaft Isaurien: Nachdem Paulus gescheitert ist, kommt das Evangelium Christi durch Konon, einen Dorfbewohner aus dem Taurosgebirge, der kaum Griechisch spricht, dafür aber die einheimische Sprache, zu den Bewohnern der Berge. Er befriedet die notorisch unruhige Region, indem er Dämonen austreibt. Von einem römischen Statthalter vor Gericht gezerrt, wird ihm als Christ unter Foltern der Prozeß gemacht – doch seine isaurischen Jünger greifen zu den Waffen und befreien den blutüberströmten Wundertäter von der Folterbank. So zumindest stellt es die spätantike griechische Märtyrervita Konons dar, die in diesem Band ediert, übersetzt und eingeleitet wird. Auch wenn Konon also nicht als Märtyrer starb, breitete sich sein Kult zunächst in Kleinasien und dann im weiteren Mittelmeerraum aus; großen Anteil daran hatte der ebenfalls aus dem Tauros stammende Kaiser Zenon. Unangefochtenes Zentrum von Konons Verehrung blieb seine Heimat, Isaurien. Hier scheint auch seine Vita verfaßt worden zu sein, bevor sie sich in griechischen Handschriften verbreitete und in viele Sprachen der Alten Welt, darunter Koptisch, Armenisch und – später – Altkirchenslawisch, übersetzt wurde. Dieser Band steht in enger Verbindung mit TU 184.

The Bronze Age is frequently framed in social evolutionary terms. Viewed as the period which saw the emergence of social differentiation, the development of long-distance trade, and the intensification of agricultural production, it is seen as the precursor and origin-point for significant aspects of the modern world. This book presents a very different image of Bronze Age Britain and Ireland. Drawing on the wealth of material from recent excavations, as well as a long history of research, it explores the impact of the post-Enlightenment 'othering' of the non-human on our understanding of Bronze Age society. There is much to suggest that the conceptual boundary between the active human subject and the passive world of objects, so familiar from our own cultural context, was not drawn in this categorical way in the Bronze Age; the self was constructed in relational rather than individualistic terms, and aspects of the non-human world such as pots, houses, and mountains were considered animate entities with their own spirit or soul. In a series of thematic chapters on the human body, artefacts, settlements, and landscapes, this book considers the character of Bronze Age personhood, the relationship between individual and society, and ideas around agency and social power. The treatment and deposition of things such as querns, axes, and human remains provides insights into the meanings and values ascribed to objects and places, and the ways in which such items acted as social agents in the Bronze Age world.
