"Es war das hauptsächlich die Erwägung der hohen Wichtigkeit der Kunstphilosophie gerade für unsere Zeit und die fernere Erwägung des tiefen Verfalls und der noch tieferen Ungunst, woran dieselbe gleichwohl bei dem starken Vorwiegen der materiellen Interessen mit der gesamten Philosophie zu leiden hat. So sehr unsere Zeit mit praktischeren, drängenderen Fragen überladen zu sein scheint, halte ich deshalb die Arbeit an ästhetischen Aufgaben keineswegs für zu entlegen und nebensächlich. Wer an den grossen Kulturinteressen der Menschheit irgend Teil nimmt und dabei nicht ganz aus der Hand in den Mund lebt, kann die ethisch -praktische Bedeutung mancher noch ungelösten ästhetischen Fragen für die höhere Ökonomie des Völkerlebens unmöglich verkennen. Wenn wir von den Problemen der hohen Metaphysik: Gott, Freiheit, Unsterblichkeit und andrerseits von entschieden praktischen Aufgaben absehen, so bleiben wohl wenige Fragen übrig, die den menschlichen Geist so vielfach beschäftigt und so verschiedene Antworten gefunden haben als die Frage nach der Gesetzmässigkeit der Kunst. Gesetz und Freiheit finden wir als Stichworte einer in allen Lebenskreisen verbreiteten Kontroverse, einer Streitfrage, um welche alle Welt sich in Parteien gruppiert in dem mehr oder minder deutlichen Bewusstsein, dass es sich damit um den Kern des Wesens der Kunst und der Schönheit selbst handelt. Ja noch darüber hinaus scheint die Tragweite dieser Frage sich zu erstrecken und was dem Streite hier und da eine etwas lebhaftere Färbung gibt das dürfte die nicht undeutliche Vorahnung sein, dass in der künstlerischen zugleich die sittliche und bürgerliche Freiheit und in der ästhetischen alle Gesetzmässigkeit und Zucht beschlossen sei."
