The essays in this volume discuss worldwide economic integration between 1850 and 1930, challenging the popular description of the period after 1918 as one of mere deglobalisation. The authors argue that markets were not only places of material exchange, but also socially structured entities, shaped by the agency of individual actors and by complex structures of political and economic power. Economic transactions were supported by an array of different institutions, ranging from formalised regulations to informal relations of personal trust. They argue that these networks were strong enough to prosper even during and after World War I, in a political climate often hostile to foreign trade. The Foundations of Worldwide Economic Integration shows that institutionalism altered its shape in the face of circumstances that increasingly challenged international trade. By presenting case studies from various countries, this book offers a fresh perspective on crucial periods of economic globalisation.

Im ersten Teil des Werkes zeichnet der Autor die Entwicklung des deutschen Edelmetallsektors von 1933 bis 1939 nach und arbeitet zugleich die Rahmenbedingungen und die Entscheidungen der verschiedenen Unternehmen in dieser Branche heraus. Besonderes Augenmerk legt er innerhalb der sektoralen Marktanalyse auf das unternehmerische Handeln der Aktiengesellschaft Deutsche Gold- und Silber-Scheideanstalt vormals Roessler (Degussa) als Marktführer der Branche und größter deutscher Scheideanstalt. Zusammen mit der Darstellung des deutschen Edelmetallbewirtschaftungssystems bis 1939 ermöglichen dann die Ergebnisse dieser Branchenstudie ein Verständnis der Verwertungswege der geraubten Edelmetalle im Zweiten Weltkrieg. Im zweiten Teil der Studie werden die Beschlagnahme und der Raub von Edelmetallen in Deutschland und den besetzten Gebieten sowie der Transfer der Edelmetalle ins Reich und ihre dortige Verwertung durch die verschiedenen staatlichen Institutionen, aber auch privaten Unternehmen untersucht. Die genauen Umstände dieser räuberischen Beschaffungsaktionen werden anhand zahlreicher Fallbeispiele für die einzelnen Länder sowie anhand konkreter Ausbeutungsvorgänge in den Vernichtungslagern betrachtet. Dabei werden die Antriebsfaktoren herausgearbeitet und die Handlungsspielräume der jeweiligen Akteure ausgelotet, die in einem polykratischen Konkurrenzsystem ohne zentrale Lenkung operierten. Für die Kriegszeit richtet sich das Interesse der Analyse aber auch auf die Konkurrenz der deutschen Edelmetallunternehmen und die Motive für ihre Beteiligung an der Raubgutverwertung. Auch das Wissen der Unternehmen um die Herkunft der Edelmetalle sowie die aus den Geschäften stammenden Gewinne werden untersucht. Das Buch von Ralf Banken zeichnet sich durch dreierlei aus: 1. Die Ergebnisse der Archiv- und Literaturstudien werden in die allgemeine Geschichte des "Dritten Reiches" eingebunden. Auf diese Weise werden Besatzungs-, Holocaust-, Wirtschafts- und Politikgeschichte miteinander verbunden. 2. Der Autor analysiert sämtliche Handlungsebenen. Dadurch werden sowohl das Vorgehen und die Interessen der verschiedenen raubenden Institutionen vor Ort sowie die Reaktionen der verschiedenen Opfergruppen als auch die Politik der verschiedenen Ministerien und das Vorgehen der Unternehmen berücksichtigt. 3. Die Untersuchung beschränkt sich nicht allein auf den Edelmetallraub in nur einem Gebiet, sondern nimmt die Konfiskationen in allen besetzten Gebieten vergleichend in den Blick.

In the spring of 1945, Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler, President Edvard Benes, and Marshal Josip Broz Tito stood as examples of the complete rupture between the Germans and Austrians on the one hand, and the Czechs, Slovaks, Slovenes, Croats, Serbs, and Bosniaks on the other. The total break that occurred in World War II with war crimes, crimes against humanity, and even genocides (particularly against the Jews and "Gypsies") had a long pre-history, beginning with violent nationalist clashes in the Habsburg Monarchy during the revolutions of 1848/49. Therefore, this monograph - based on a broad range of international primary and secondary sources - explores the development of the political, legal, economic, social, and cultural "communities of conflict" within Austria-Hungary, especially in the Bohemian and South Slavic countries, the making of the Paris Peace Treaties in 1919/20 by violating President Wilson's principle of self-determination, particularly in drawing new borders and creating new economic units, and the perpetuated ethnic-national conflicts between Czechs and Germans, Slovaks and Magyars, Slovenes and Germans, Croats and Serbs as well as Serbs and Germans in the successor states, deepening the differences between the nations of East-Central Europe. Although many kings, presidents, chancellors, ministers, governors, diplomats, business tycoons, generals, Nazi-Gauleiter, higher SS and police leaders, and Communist functionaries have appeared as historical actors in the 170 years of East-Central and Southeastern European history, Hitler, Benes, and Tito remain especially present in historical memory at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
